A father and son team have opened a business in Harlem called Sneaker Pawn. Troy Reed got the idea when he would take his son Chase's sneakers for collateral when he would borrow money.
Customers can pawn, sell, or buy from the store.

How far has a “culture” sunk when it starts using sneakers as an instrument of barter?

Yep. The #1 unauthorized use of school computers that I see here in NYC high schools is kids (generally black boys) perusing high-dollar sneaker websites. The way we’d peruse beautiful homes, boats, cars, horses, jewelry, etc., they are looking over those sneakers. And they can be quite conversant about every little fine point of the sneakers. For me, who the heck cares about SNEAKERS? You wear them on your feet. But it’s sneaker websites they go to, every time.
Not all blacks buy Jordan sneakers, probably not even most.

No. The boots were purchased by me, so my property. I am not talking about issued equipment but the expensive concoran boots worn by Paratroopers but not government issued. These boots were for show only, never worn for work or surprisingly enough, for jumping.
The only problem is if there was an inspection I would be forced to wear my government issued boots and I would stand out like a sore thumb (never a good thing in the Army). I would get some light company level punishment. Which explains why I did not do it unless desperate for money (which usually involved a girl ;)
Maybe ‘Thou shalt not covet’ is in the book for a reason.
It’s a shame that people who don’t have enough to get through the week/month blow money on expensive designer athletic shoes at the start of the month.

Except most whites don’t show off their status through boats, cars and houses; at least not the ones I know living out here in the sticks, whom are quite affluent. I am quite affluent, but you would never know it from my beat up pick up, my lack of a boat, or my very modest older home. Only ones I know who behave like that are liberals.
OK.My (much) older brother was 82nd Airborne when I was a kid and I don't recall ever having seen...or heard of...expensive boots.I thought you were talking about government issue.By "punishment" are you talking Article 15,or something less "formal"?
I was taught by my father,a child of the Depression,to live below my means...as he did for the last 40+ years of his life.Doing so was tough when I was starting out...because my "means" were pretty meager.But now I,like you,am absolutely fine with living fairly modestly.

The difference is, Chumley can afford what he buys. He isn’t waiting for Uncle Sugar’s Check to show up to pay for his Sneakers.
Less formal. Extra guard duty or KP (Kitchen Police). For those young ones in the service today, we did not have civilians working in the kitchen. KP meant getting up around 4:30 and doing all the scut work in the kitchen and not ending up until around 7 pm after everything has been cleaned and the floors polished.
I'm not all that much younger than you (enlisted,with a nudge from of Selective Service,in '69) so I'm all too familiar with KP.
