Blackhawks name hasn't been as controversial as Redskins
Chicago Tribune ^ | June 18, 2014 | John Keilman

The Chicago Blackhawks declined to comment about the Washington Redskins’ loss of trademark protection Wednesday, but an expert said there’s little reason to believe the hockey team’s name and Indian head logo could face similar jeopardy.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office found in a 2-to-1 decision that trademarks covering the Redskins’ name and associated symbols disparaged American Indians, and thus must be canceled under federal law. The team vowed to appeal, noting it had won a similar legal case a decade ago.

Blackhawk is a tribal name, is it not? Redskins is a generic name that anyone can claim is offensive. Maybe Washington should change their name to a tribal name like Mohawks. I wonder if that would pass muster?

Don’t forget the Cowboys, Bucaneers, Raiders, Steelers, and the 49ers. Can’t have teams with names that exemplify evil groups of white people killing and exploiting native peoples and natural resources to quench their ruthless need for wealth. Oh sorry, I was in liberal mindset mode there for a minute. This is ridiculous. Political correctness has gone into overdrive. Next it will be onto names on our food. Can’t have cookies called oreos and God forbid we should have Aunt Jemima frozen waffles and Uncle Ben’s rice......

It’s the difference between a team named the Brooklyn Chasids versus one called the Staten Island Kikes.

Redskins is not the neutral name of a tribe, or a generic group of people, it’s a derogatory term for a “savage” enemy that we tried hard to exterminate for a century.

There is a probability of degrees of offense to some but I think if the Redskins changed the name to something akin to Mohawks, considering the current fervor, the new name would be equally ridiculed. I remember when the USFL had nicknames such as the Oklahoma Outlaws and the Tampa Bay Bandits. I have doubts as to whether those would be allowed. Remember, Washington Bullets was recently changed to Washington Wizards to appease a certain condition, meaning questionable nicknames aren't limited to the names representing people.

The Blackhawks should worry. Liberals never stop assaulting the culture. Look what they’ve done with cigarette smoke. Look what they’ve done with gay rights. Anyone who thinks they’ll go away with a few political victories is sadly mistaken.

How about the Los Angeles Angels MLB team? Doesn’t the name offend atheists? Wait a minute...better change the name of the city itself. Then there are those offensive ‘saint’ cities like Santa Barbara, etc. Man, this is going to get rough.

This is not the hill I want to die on. Daniel Snyder’s licensing rights are just no concern of mine. WHO CARES. They should change their name to the Hogs in honor of the O-line of their last good teams, and be done with it. Why is this something the Republican party should be fighting for?

How about the names of towns being offensive! There are lots of cities with Indian tribal names Just look at Oklahoma, Alabama and Mississippi.

Then there is that evil RED MAN chewing tobacco and cigar store Indians.

“Kaw-Liga”

KAW-LIGA, was a wooden Indian standing by the door
He fell in love with an Indian maid over in the antique store
KAW-LIGA - A, just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer “YES” or “NO”.

He always wore his Sunday feathers and held a tomahawk
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he’d talk
KAW-LIGA - A, too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.

[Chorus:]
Poor ol’ KAW-LIGA, he never got a kiss
Poor ol’ KAW-LIGA, he don’t know what he missed
Is it any wonder that his face is red
KAW-LIGA, that poor ol’ wooden head.

Heck. Move the team to San Antonio call them the Bandits and be done with it.

I don’t disagree that there are far more important issues and causes but what happens if people want to change the names of schools or streets or towns and cities named after former US presidents or founding fathers because some deem it representative of something offensive from the past?

"Why is this something the Republican party should be fighting for?"

Because it sets a precedence. What they are saying is if a Trademarked Name is deemed offensive in the least bit then the Gub'ment has the right to disallow the trademark.

That is a very slippery slope.

I mean I bet there is a few people that think Smith and Wesson, Glock, Ruger and Remington are offensive. Can you imagine the political WMD you are heading to the Gub'ment by saying this is OK?

Vikings were the first oppressors of Native Americans

My state of Oklahoma will need to change its name then. The Choctaw words okla and humma means red people. Not a derogatory term for savages. Redskins was also a generic moniker. Over time, the meaning of words are changed by activists. Hell, just a year ago, marriage meant something completely different.
