The Chicago Blackhawks declined to comment about the Washington Redskins’ loss of trademark protection Wednesday, but an expert said there’s little reason to believe the hockey team’s name and Indian head logo could face similar jeopardy.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office found in a 2-to-1 decision that trademarks covering the Redskins’ name and associated symbols disparaged American Indians, and thus must be canceled under federal law. The team vowed to appeal, noting it had won a similar legal case a decade ago.

I would guess it would be discussed and reasonable people can determine the proper course of action.
While there was no doubt more than one Black Hawk, the most famous is a chief of the Sauk tribe who fought the US in and around IL. A. Lincoln was in the IL militia during this war.
If that were to happen then people in the relevant community would have to decide what they think about the matter and then make the best decision they are capable of. Just because something has been one way for a long time doesn’t mean it has to always be that way. The Washington Redskins team name is not in the Ten Commandments or the Bill of Rights. It’s just a stupid nickname (as are all team nicknames when you think about it) for a business entity representing the capital city of the country.
If the Munich, Germany soccer team were to change its name to the Hook-nosed Moneylending Christ-killers, do you think people would be offended? I do. I am Jewish which is why I am using these metaphors, because they resonate for me personally, and by analogy I can see how an American Indian would be offended by the Redskins, but much less so by the Blackhawks. (Chief Wahoo, on the other hand.......)
Change the name to the African American Hawks.

I find blackskins, pinkskins, yellowskins and redskins to be in bad taste where I find blackhawks, seminoles, indians, etc. to be fine.
I think is comes from old expressions like “skin the bastard alive.”
That they were savage is a fact. Regardless of how un-PC it is to say so today. Or, if you wish to dispute the term, you'll have to come up with a definition of "non-savage" that allows for routinely torturing captured enemies to death, which most tribes practiced.
It is factually incorrect to say "we tried hard to exterminate (them) for a century."
US policy wavered, but generally was aimed at assimilating Indians, not exterminating them. Of course, you can get around that by calling it "cultural genocide." When Indians were moved onto reservations, we fed them, however poorly the policy was implemented in many cases. Not exactly something you do with people you are determined to exterminate.
That physical extermination was never routine US policy can by seen by the fact that they weren't exterminated, when doing so was easily within US capabilities.
To look at an actual policy of extermination, you might want to google the Indian Wars of Argentina. They DID have a policy of extermination, and Argentina doesn't really have an Indian problem today. Because they mostly don't have any Indians.
Last year the NCAA did away with the "Fighting Sioux," but had no problem with keeping the "Fighting Irish."

If you look at the name and logo of the Washington Redskins vs the name and logo of the Cleveland Indians..
the Indian's logo is far more offensive
..a “little Sambo” type logo
vs the Redskins logo which is almost a Noble monument type logo similar to the Indian Head nickel
People that go out to find things to be offended by are sad.

The way the Redskins have been playing, there name should be “Lesshawks” instead of “Mohawks.”

It’s from an individual name, Chief Blackhawk. He was Fox or Sauk tribe, I believe. He was, presumably a brave man, so a good choice as a Symbol for a very masculine team sport.
Conservative blacks will not be offended by the name, but certain litigious scab pickers might be offended by the first part of Chief Blackhawk’s name.
Abraham Lincoln, who unlike the current occupant of the White House, served in Military, fought in the Blackhawk wars. He stopped overnight at a spring near Whitewater Wisconsin and his horse was stolen. He had to walk all the way back to Salem Illinois.
The African-American Hawks would be more a more sensitive name.
