May he rest in peace.

That said, NOTHING irritates me more than Alvin and the Chipmunks “music”. It creeps me out.

We had our "chipmunks" moment. My wife was driving the then very young daughters in the Caprice wagon with the non-functioning A/C in August. Eventually, they wore her down and got her to play the Chipmunks Christmas cassette with the windows rolled down in town, for everyone to hear.

Far more significant than the Chipmunks or even the great Johnny Mann Singers, was his (and the singers) role in producing some of the most memorable radio jingles of the Top 40 era. While most top 40 stations turned to PAMS in Dallas, programming consultant Bill Drake in LA hired the Johnny Mann Singers to produce jingles that were dramatic and unique and which ended up creating the signiture “Boss Radio” sound for the biggest stations in the nation, like “KHJ....Los Angeles”

RIP Johnny Mann. Your sound lives on.

His song about Alvin and the hula hoop is my favorite song from childhood. To this day, when ever I hear it, I drop what ever I’m doing, and sing along with it.

I didn't realize the Johnny Mann Singers did the KHJ jingles. I saw them perform at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif. in the mid-1970's. I found their precision in their singing and dance routines to be quite impressive.

KHJ, one of LA's oldest stations, played country western until the early spring of 1965, when they switched to Top 40. They quickly won me over from KRLA because they delivered on their promise of "more music." On KHJ, you would hear several songs in a row, while on KRLA and KFWB, you would have to sit through an ad and DJ chatter between each song. It wasn't long before KHJ owned the lion's share of the Top 40 audience in Southern California.
