World Cup 2014: United States and Portugal Play to 2-2 Draw
New York Times ^ | 06/22/2014 | JEFF Z. KLEIN

The United States had advancement to the second round within its grasp, only to have it slip away agonizing moments from the final whistle. The startling counterstrike came when Silvestre Varela headed home a perfect inswinging cross from Cristiano Ronaldo in the fifth minute of stoppage time, giving Portugal a 2-2 draw with the Americans in Manaus.

With that last-second goal, Portugal kept its slim World Cup hopes alive. The U.S., meanwhile, will play its group finale against Germany on Thursday in Recife, with both teams needing a draw to advance.

But if the United States were to lose, they could be caught by either Portugal or Ghana. The Portugal-Ghana match will be played in Brasilia, at the same time as USA-Germany.

So the clock ran out, and they kept playing until the other team could tie the score?

Except Nani and Ronaldo, Portugal was clearly outplayed. The USA was the better team, shame the scoreboard didn’t reflect it.

Oh gosh an eggball fan here, make yourself at home! Let me find that picture of Michael Sam smearing with cake and exchanging saliva with his quivering boy toy...

I can’t believe I have to suffer another World Cup watching Michael Bradley drag around the field making one bad pass after another. Generally the next person to touch the ball after Bradley was someone wearing a red uniform. An Mikey, after you lose the ball, please show some urgency about getting it back! Yuck! Please start anyone but Mikey, Jurgen. Give him a rest! Oldplayer

Why wasn't he substituted out after he missed the goal. Even the second goal he bobbled and had to push it off. He's lucky Dempsey followed through like he did because the guy he pushed it off to had no angle on the goal.

Dempsey has been running his tail off trying to make things happen and Bradley has been dogging it. Anybody on that team would have been a better pick to play I don't know why Jurgen keeps him in. Hell Donovan would have done a better job and had more of a political reason to be chosen for the team.

Unlucky USA - I hope you get a pint against Germany and carry on through to the next round - you have played well enough!

One mental lapse on a bad pass cost the U.S. the match. Need to play to the very end.

Problem is that with Bradley, it’s not ONE mental lapse, it’s two games full.

To be fair, if Fabian Johnson would have buried himself to save Bradley’s lapse one more time, things could have been different. But a giveaway under those circumstances was the last thing he expected or he would have already started back.

Michael Bradley = the new Claudio Reyna. Another guy who can complete 85% of his passes, as long as they are back passes. Shades of Ghana 2006! Both acted as they were brilliant field marshalls, when at best they were pretty average players (at this level LOL).

Stig, I think at this point Jurgen has to play the only cards he brought. Mix Dskerud (However you spell it, sorry!) is a good, tough and smart player that has some of the skills needed; but he hasn’t played Bradley’s role at all for this team. It’s too late to fix this problem that has been a fear of many of us all along.

That may be why you start the guy but if the game plan is to sit on the lead you just need a guy who can defend well and distribute the ball out of the midfield. The worst part of this is I thought the rest of the team was playing rather well compared to the Ghana game. Reminds me of the Rangers in the Stanley cup. Ugh!

U R soooo right, and the announcers keep carrying his water! it was SO dam obvious he gave away the final play. he could have done ANYTHING else and time runs out.

Bradley is lazy and if I didn’t know better, plays for opponents.

pathetic now 2 games in a row.

Be sure to see post #27, sweetie. I hear one gets to see a lot of that “faggotry” at SEC football games - both on the field and in the stands.

I’d be very surprised if she rooted for the USA... :)
