So Far, excellent, had NO problems installing (less than 15 minutes).. another 5, or so to install updates (and never had to reboot!)..

This is the forst KDE version I installed (Live, of course) that gave me no problems with partitioning.. was able to set up: Boot Root Swap USR/LOG Opt CAR Var/log tmp and Home, with no LiveBoot Crashes..

abother hour to set things the way I like to set them (and uninstalling stuff I don't need.. replacing them too)..

All said... less than 2 1/2 hours to get my PC back to normal (compared to 2 weeks and many reboot on Win :p)..

I am starting to understand why many go to Cinnamon though.. simple stuff.. but I am very picky about what I am working with, and KDE gives that flexibility to me.

Geron, btw... found a PERFECT music player.. called Qmmp.. is a WinAmp clone (can ever use WinAmp skins).. skip the Pulse audio and saves us from listening to the music skips ;^)

I like Mint, but for me there’s been problems with a few releases. I’ve shifted over to Debian Testing (Jessie) for my linux machine, and I’m a little happier. YMMV, of course.

I have questions, and I don't mind if no one answers, because it is semi off topic...I have a hp laptop (that's my real problem) from 2008/9--an AMD 64 bit running Precise Pangolin Ubuntu x32.

1. What is a good antivirus/security system?

2. If I buy Mint on a DVD that comes with one of those $18 magazines they sell at the bookstores in the UK and US, Can it install properly without erasing my files? Or should I save the files to another drive (or make another partition for just my files) format the drive, and install the new OS?

3. Or should I just sell the laptop before it becomes worthless?

Hmm.. laptop.. many ways to go about your situation.. BEST, is to pull your HD and put a new one in (saves your old information)..

OK... Just to let you know, you do NOT have to buy NAY Linux OS.. and Anti-virus options are always there.. but I have never had to use one (yet).. (and I have been on computers since 1980.. there are a few here that have been on them before me....)..

When people post issues with Windows the advisory posts from other FReepers are usually something along the following lines:

‘Get a Mac!’ or ‘Get Linux!’ ;-)

Like almost all Linux desktops, Mint is free and it can run on almost any PC you have at hand. All it requires is an x86 processor; 512 MBs of RAM (you’ll be happier though with 1GB); 5 GBs of disk space; a graphics card that can handle 800×600 resolution; and a DVD drive or USB port. That’s all.

So can Mint work on a laptop with wifi? I remember trying to install several versions of LINUX years ago and there was no way to get wifi to work.

I run linux on an old netbook, but it’s too under-powered and not really worth upgrading. But I have an older desktop with Win XP I’m thinking about converting to Linux.

I wonder if it’s it possible to run an older version of Microsoft Office on a linux computer?
