U.S. soccer advances to World Cup knockout stage despite loss to Germany

RECIFE, Brazil — The U.S. national soccer team advanced to the next round of the World Cup on Thursday, thanks in part to a handsome and talented chap playing 850 miles away.

While the Americans failed to control their future, losing to Germany, 1-0, at soggy Arena Pernambuco, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late goal to all but end Ghana’s hopes of catching the United States in the Group G standings.

The Americans (1-1-1) finished second in the so-called Group of Death, even on points with Portugal (1-1-1) but well ahead on the first tiebreaker, goal difference. The United States finished with as many goals for as against, while Portugal — a 2-1 winner over Ghana (0-2-1) in Brasilia — was minus-three.

Said Sunil Gulati, president of the U.S. Soccer Federation: “Group of Death, I died a few times. It is a little bit of an odd feeling because you have lost your last game but we are dancing. We did what we needed to do in this group.”

On Tuesday in a round-of-16 game in Salvador, the Americans will play the winner of Group H, which was scheduled to conclude play later Thursday. Belgium began the day in prime position to clinch first place, with Algeria and Russia in pursuit.

My guess would be “American,” but I could be wrong.

My point is “why achieve when it doesn’t count anyway.”

I agree. We are 16th out of 16 in the playoffs for a reason. Losing Altidore was brutal and it really shows.

And that point is relevant to this thread and the AYSO how, exactly? Actually, don’t bother, you’re not really here for a good faith debate anyway so I’m not wasting anymore time with you.

Good point. In domestic US sports only teams with perfect records get into the playoffs.

It's mathematically impossible in the NFL for a team with fewer wins than another team to make it into the playoffs while the other team stays home . . .

Oh wait.

Nah...I think it’s one of those sports that when a team loses..the fans at home kill the player/s that they perceive lost the game for their team.

I think we’re 14th, ahead of Greece and Nigeria.

It looks like the next round is A1 vs. B2, B1 vs. A2, etc.
USA is G2 vs. Belgium H1. I’m not sure what happens after that.

pretty much every sport that kids play is ruined. Half the people I know with kids are "going to nationals" Back in my day...only one team won nationals...AND WE LIKED IT!

Seems like now people have keyed in on how parents will sign up for "traveling teams" Now everyone is going to Nationals even with the LL World Series still going one. And tons of trophies for "national" held in every state/tri-state/time zone...for softball, swimming, cheerleading, soccer, you name it.

only one that doesn't seem to do it is football, probably because it costs too much to move that many people and gear

A win, a loss and a tie - and on to the playoffs!

I can barely contain my excitement.

No, only the winner gets a trophy in soccer.

Well the game of soccer might be growing on me. I was at a Buffalo Wild Wings the other night - you know, the casual eating joint that features 72 widescreen TVs, lousy food, a lot of noise and reasonably priced beer on tap?

Anyway, many of those screens featured soccer players running to and fro on the field. Some of those players can kick the ball really hard, I mean really hard. The ball goes a long way. So the game is potentially exciting. If only the net was bigger so that more goals could be scored.

Some additional minor critiques...they really shouldn't use their heads to re-direct the ball. That just looks odd. And those socks are way too high. Tube socks? You'd think they were still in the 1970s. Makes me want to put on a Peter Frampton record.
