Word For The Day, Friday, June 27, 2014-- decant
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
hear it pronounced
verb, transitive (used with object)
1. to pour (wine or other liquid) gently so as not to disturb the sediment.
2. to pour (a liquid) from one container to another.
3. to rehouse (people) while their homes are being rebuilt or refurbished
Origin: 162535; < Medieval Latin dēcanthāre, equivalent to Latin dē- de- + Medieval Latin canth ( us ) spout, rim of a vessel ( Latin: iron band round a wheel < Greek kánthos corner of the eye, tire) + -āre infinitive suffix
History: 1630s, "pour off the clear liquid from a solution by gently tipping the vessel," originally an alchemical term, from Fr. decanter, from M.L. decanthare, from canthus "corner, lip of a jug," from Gk. kanthos "corner of the eye," on a perceived resemblance between the beaked lip of a jug and the corner of the eye.
decantation [dee-kan-tey-shuh n] noun
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Subbing for tioga, who is still on the mend.
Dee and Sally have the same English Lit teacher, but Decant read too well.
I had to leave the liberal convention because I couldn’t stand de cant.
I had to leave the liberal convention because I couldnt stand de cant.
At first I thought you were talking about Hillary and made a spelling error.
Obama is decanting the new wine of illegal immigrants into the old wineskin of high unemployment, in the hope that the change will burst open any remaining economic stability.
Speaking politically, of course, decant is what attracts de fools.
Dat’s de truth.
that was a great sentence!
and that’s an even better one! everyone is on FAHR today!
Haha - I caught that one!
Thank you for subbing!
If you decant run or walk, you can always decant the wine bottle while you wait.
Had my interview out at Dulles airport for my global entry pass, to hopefully expedite travel through security. xshub has the pass, and we need xsbaby’s passport before she can apply for it. this is for the London trip in oct.
xsboy is about to leave for bachelor party weekend in Ocean City, picking the affianced up at noon from his ofc. hopefully that will be fun but incident free. Groomsmen are flying in from San Diego and Florida for this. The weather is supposed to be great. I think a half day fishing charter is on the menu, as well as a trip to Atlantic City.
There's only so much that Conservative spokespersons like Sarah or Ted can do to focus attention on the issue; if the people in general don't wake up soon, then the 21st Cent. AD will mark the transition of America into something that those who established its Founding & fought for until now will no longer recognize.
What did they ask you during this interview?
They quickly decided it was suicide, huh?
It took me longer to walk from the parking lot to the ofc in the airport than it did for the interview. they took my pic, they took my fingerprints, they asked if i had ever been arrested for DUI or reckless driving, ever been convicted of a crime, where i worked, where i had traveled internationally in the past 5 years and why, and if i had any upcoming international travel. I walked in the door at home and checked and i was already approved.
it strikes me as more plausibly a suicide than a murder. an atty facing charges is going to have that weighing heavily. the taking and distributing a surreptitious pic of an alzheimer patient sounds beyond scummy and if he had a part in that, it was not going to be a good thing for him.
I always wonder what that guy behind her is thinking. His expression is somewhat funny.
Obama wants congress to give
Millions to the Syrian cause
To arm some hand picked rebels-
Shouldn’t that give us pause?
Three years ago, he wouldn’t
Give funds in secretive quiet-
To decant the money gently
So as not to provoke a riot
But no, let’s just uncork it-
Make sure it’s flashy enough
To tempt every rival faction
To come rip off all our stuff...
Total insanity-does no one in congress realize all those tanks, rocket launchers, guns, etc actually are bought with OUR MONEY and so are actually just leased to someone else?
He’s thinking “if she falls back and touches my junk, I’ll never be able to have children.”
Thank you for subbing!
Glad to help out.
I’d go with “Waist-ed!”
A rare 4th “plus” for a truly outstanding contribution.
One of your best efforts!
We ought to hide GPS trackers in all of our military equipment. That way, when our “allies” surrender our stuff to the terrorists, we’ll know exactly where those bastards are.
Time to decant the wine & curl up with some summer reading:
Happy weekend, all.
I’m willing to bet all that equipment comes with GPS-for the price, it certainly should-and if it goes missing, we need to track it to wherever it is and send either armed drones or bombers with pissed off military pilots at the controls...
I love a good book.
Decant take that away from me.
Heard that he had been ostracized since he was arrested. sad.
Probably but in politics you just never know. And yes, it was a dirty deed to even involve the wife.
I spent my day driving to and from Memphis to decant my child from college. She had a wonderful time and it was nice to see all the kids sad to say goodbye to each other. We drove through monsoons on the way home, which always makes the drive seem longer, so I am glad to be home, with all under one roof again. :)
I found your tale of decanting your child from college and getting your family together heartwarming, for sedimental reasons.
Whenever I say decant, my physical therapist says decan.
Obama’s catch phrase should have been”Yes we can’t!”
Tucan, decan, we all can!
Wine? did someone say wine?
Yeah, three days ago. It's all gone now.
Luckily I brought more. You got a decanter?
