TROUTDALE, Ore.–Jared Michael Padgett was a straight-arrow kid who had a fascination with guns, planned a career in the military and was deeply devoted to his Mormon faith, those who knew him say.
And they're all wondering why the 15-year-old took an assault rifle, a handgun and nine ammunition magazines to his high school and killed a fellow freshman, injured a teacher and took his own life.
Police said Wednesday that they have not been able to establish a link between Padgett and Emilio Hoffman, the 14-year-old who was shot dead in a locker room.
Police have not said whether they believe Padgett had a specific target when he arrived at Reynolds High School in Troutdale on Tuesday morning or planned a random shooting.
Padgett was passionate about guns and had a temper, but he also seemed like a nice and normal kid, students say...
Earl Milliron, a close friend of the Padgett family, said Jared planned a career in the military, was a devout Mormon and was ordained as a deacon at age 12. He was so dependable at church, Milliron said, that the bishop appointed Jared president of the deacons' quorum.
"His father never told me he was worried about Jared. And I never suspected that he had serious problems," said Milliron, 86, who has known the Padgett family for more than 25 years and belongs to the same church ward. "I refuse in my mind to believe that Jared Michael who did the shooting is the same Jared Michael I knew."...
Padgett's parents had separated about five years ago, and the father raised the couple's six children...
"I saw Jared at church every Sunday," he said. "He was very quiet, I never saw him angry, he was extremely even-tempered, he was always at the best possible behavior."

The last five years of mass shootings, all the shooters were on psychotropic drugs or some sort. (Two had the same psychologist)

What would you have the church do differently? Should they refrain from ordaining any twelve-year-old males as deacons because of the possibility that one of them will later murder someone?
I have a bright idea (please pass it along to the Mormon Elite who run the company): How about following the Bible in pinpointing eligibles for deacons:
8 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. 11 In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. 12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. (1 Timothy 3:8-12)
Obviously, TT, deacons in the early Christian Church -- if they had a wife and children and were not to be given to much wine -- were mature, respected ADULTS.
Your continuous bashing of Mormons is REALLY getting tiresome.
It is obviously an obsession.
The responsibilities of a twelve-year-old deacon in the Mormon church would not tend to be as great as the responsibilities of an adult deacon as described in 1 Timothy, but their assignments introduce them to the concept of service in the priesthood for the good of others, such as the passing of the sacrament trays of bread and water. I can see how you might object to the nomenclature of referring to these boys as deacons, but how could anyone object to the service they provide for the benefit of others (such as passing the sacrament)? Most of these deacons will probably grow up to be fine, law-abiding citizens. However, if there is a large enough pool of deacons (12-year-old or even adult), the odds are that one (or a few) of these will later commit terrible crimes, but this should not be an obstacle to the worthy idea of trying to place wholesome responsibilities on these youth.
This reminds me where you hear about those overly concerned about people who drive panel trucks (or simply stand on the public sidewalk) showing pictures of aborted babies in the proximity of high school and college campuses.
They are more concerned about the images of aborted babies being made public to students than the violent murders which caused those babies to be mangled to begin with!
With those people who object to aborted images -- but not to how those babies became that way -- there's a deep moral and spiritual void looming there!
My initial comment in this piece was contrasting how 12 year old boys could be entrusted with deacon responsibilities in the Mormon Church; but if any woman dare advocate that females could carry these same "introductory" responsibilities in the Mormon Church, they are at risk of ex-communication!
If this is all so "grand" -- for 12-year-old BOYS to be introduced into "service they provide for the benefit of others" -- then why might you object to 12-year-old GIRLS who could be "introduced" into "service...provided for the benefit of others?"
Wouldn't this also be "wholesome responsibilities" to include girls -- if it's so "beneficial" for both the girls and others?
It certainly would be beneficial for girls to be introduced into the same responsibilities as the boys if it were the will of God that the priesthood should be extended to women as well as men. I think that is the central question here: should the priesthood be extended to women? The leaders of the church do not believe that women are supposed to hold the priesthood. Kate Kelly, the protester who was excommunicated, objected to the doctrine of a male-only priesthood, so there was an impasse. Apparently, she not only held an opinion contrary to the church leaders on this issue, but actively campaigned against the church doctrine by forming the group “Ordain Women,” and holding protests at church meetings. So her excommunication was the result of her actively fighting against the church on this position, not for merely holding the opinion. I am sincerely sad for Ms. Kelly, because she clearly did not want to be expelled from the church (according to the NY Times article I read), but I also see the position of the leaders. She is certainly free to join with others who have a similar view, and form a new church if she wishes.
FACT: The Mormon Church has continually invited critiques by its actions, by its words, by its doctrines, and by its spiritual counterfeiting, amongst still other areas.
There is so much biblically wrong with a 12 year old “Deacon” that it doesn’t rate an explanation among Christians.
