Brazil should win, but Chile is dangerous. Also, I have a certain amount of cynicism about the politics of football. FIFA and all the big money involved in the World Cup have a vested interest in a Brazil win. It remains to be seen if corruption creeps into the game with with the refs or the players. Glad to see the English ref who is good and fair based on his past performances I have witnessed.

Chile is the shortest team in the tournament. They average 5 feet 9 inches. Every cross and free kick is a chance for Brazil.

LOL! Online dictionaries say that isn’t a word but maybe it should be.

Anyway this is the round of 16 for people that don’t know.

Brazil sucks today.

Based on how Chile has played, they should advance.

Penalty kicks make me nervous.

This is not a strong Brazil team compared to past clubs. If this tournament were anywhere else but Brazil, they’d be out.

The "Goaltenders Friend" is no friend of Chile today, as Brazil wins in penalties 3-2.

Chile played the nearly perfect road game, but Brazil pretty much carried the play most of the time… Save for some dents in the woodwork, the home team could’ve made an untimely early exit.

Congrats to both teams for an exciting Round of 16 opener.

I still believe they will reach the final and win. This is just like March Madness when one of the Cinderella teams gives one of the favorites a scare. Brazil will be a better team after this. They will destroy the winner of Columbia-Uruguay.

This second match of the day is pretty boring aside from the Rodriguez goal, which as one of the top 5 of the World Cup.

Don’t underestimate Uruguay. Even without Suarez, they are still a very good team, organized at the back. They need more offense, but their defense is still pretty solid.

The second half will pick up in action. It is win or go home. No playing for a tie.

Great goal by Rodriguez to put Columbia up 1-0 at the Half ... Not much the goaltender could do against a high, well-placed shot.
Maybe it's asking too much to stand in front of a ball struck at 60 MPH to make a block – I guess as a hockey fan I'm used to seeing guys sell out.

Officiating was a bit rough today in both matches. Howard Webb did get the hand ball call correct.

Webb should have issued a yellow in the first few minutes for the rough challenge. Had he set the tone early on that rough play wasn’t going to be tolerated, the teams would have adjusted and the match would have gone more smoothly and much more fun to watch. He had a tough task since the teams don’t seem to like each other.

Not an overabundance of chances in today's match, probably due to the conditions ... The Netherlands goaltender was the busier of the two – it seems their strategy is to conserve energy & let the Mexican G stew in his BLACK attire. It was interesting to see the first-ever official Cooling Break (although for all the world it looked like the referee signaled a Time-out ;).

The shadow is the only part of the ball which the Netherlands G gets, as a well-placed shot by Mexico's dos Santos have the underdog leading 1-0 in the 2nd Half, thanks largely to the efforts of their own goaltender Ochoa.

Same is true today. The Dutch should have had two spot kicks.

Robben made a mental error when he did not run through the sliding tackle on his run into the penalty box from the right side. He would have been tripped and awarded an easy penalty.

Spectacular reflex saves by Mexican G Ochoa notwithstanding, their luck runs out as the furious Dutch get off the Sneijd(er) with an equalizer at 3 minutes left in FT; then, a penalty by Huntelaar in stoppage time has the goaltender looking the wrong way & his side leaving the competition with a 2-1 victory for the Netherlands.

One of the annoying things about fouls, is how the referees tend to take into account the rigid results of calling them before blowing the whistle.

For example, in the Costa Rica game now, the Greek guy broke into the free in the penalty box, and took a lovely shot that was blocked by the goalie. But after he kicked, the CRC guy slid under his legs, with studs up, hitting him and knocking him over. Never even touched the ball.

Anywhere else on the field, that would have been an illegal challenge from behind, and there’d be a free kick and the guy would have a yellow card. In fact, they just did that call a little while ago.

But no way the ref is going to give a penalty kick when the foul happened AFTER the guy had a clean shot at the goalie.
