Prayer warriors, please keep my son in your prayers!! [Update in #122]
06/30/14

Posted on 06/30/2014 11:06:30 AM PDT by trussell

More prayer needed for my family. My son was having troubles with the side of his big toe, at the edge of the toenail...I took him to urgent care/walk-in clinic and they said he had an infection and we should soak it in epsom salts, keep it clean and keep the toenails cut even. They gave him some antibiotics.

He went to camp the first week of June and when he came home, the other foot had sores on both sides of the big toe! ...and the first toe was worse. We cleaned them the same as the other foot, tried to keep them cleaned up and soaked them and then wrapped them before he went to camp for the second week. He got back Saturday and the toes were oozing puss and crusty and bloody. They were so bad I called everyone in my phone book to beg for a ride to the urgent care.

Finally found a ride and when they saw his toes, they said "this is bad". They searched for signs of an ingrown toenail in both toes and said that was not the issue. They said it was important to get him in to see a podiatrist, immediately. They prescribed a cream for the toes (the cream was denied by our insurance), told us to clean both toes with peroxide, put the cream on the sides of the nails where the nail meets the skin, cover with a 2x2 piece of gauze then wrap with gauze wrap (the disposable kind). They gave us a few pieces of gauze and a small amount of the wrap, but no tape. I got a few latex gloves to keep from passing anything to his toes and taking a chance of making the infection worse. At this point, it looks like he will lose his toenail at minimum...and if things dont get done quickly, he could lose both big toes. I am using neosporin ointment in place of the prescription cream they wanted used.

Cody needs prayers, really bad! Please...pray for Cody's medical needs. Also, does anyone have any medical supplies they don't need anymore? We need 2x2 gauze, 4x4 gauze (for cleaning), gauze wrap (2"wide roll)...bigger would probably be ok...peroxide, medical tape...the nylon style would be easier but any available would help!! Neosporin cream, cotton swabs to apply the ointment. Please, if you have any of these, contact me and I will give you an address. I am praying several people will have bits and pieces they are willing to send so I get a little bit of everything needed. God bless you all for the prayers and any help provided for the supplies.

Another issue, does anyone know how to treat poison ivy? He either has a rash that is from poison ivy or from a reaction to something he is allergic to.

Immediately take him to the hospital Emergency Room and find a specialist in infectious disease control.

This is way above Urgent Care abilities. MRSA is deadly.

please get the presciption cream the doctor recommended!!
Call the DR office and ask if they have samples or if manufacturer will comp the cream if you cannot afford it

Or call the pharm company yourself, and your County Health Department

Look up free health clinics in your area to get medical supplies

You do NOT want to mess with antibiotic resistant infections, staph, MRSA etc

Go to ER stat if there is ANY STATUS change in ANY of his physical condition including redness, swelling, spreading, fever nausea lethargy as this can go septic and get into bloodstream and go fast, in hours

Don’t want to alarm you but do want to alert you

Good Luck!

Prayers up indeed! Did they not give him oral antibiotic prescription?

Best way to heal poison ivy is still the old fashioned way - dry it up. It’s the liquid from sores which helps the toxin spread. Calamine lotion still works great for that. And...no scratching!

Also staf infections are being treated with silver. Ask about that and get cracking.

Prayers are up, dear trussel.

Sorry, failed to mention that. He got a shot of steroids, a prescription for steroids and cephalexin (antibiotic). I will have to see if we have calamine and get that on the rash on his feet. If not, will alcohol work to dry it out?

There aren't any here. I went to the food pantry today and got some latex gloves but that was all they had. I asked about all the other supplies I needed and they searched, but were so sorrowful to have to tell me they didn't have any. As for the cream, they didn't have samples and I was told "no" when I asked if the company could help me. I have no transportation unless I beg of my church friends or boyscout moms. It's getting harder and harder to find anyone willing to give me a ride. I have no way to get to the ER unless I go by ambulance, and then we have no way home. I will watch for those symptoms and call for an ambulance if they happen...that is a promise! Thank you for the information!

Would not use alcohol. You want a cream which covers and dries the skin. Alcohol could actually spread the toxin. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply if you can’t find calamine.

As someone who went through something very similar to this, the infection damn near killed me and ruined my health for the long term. I BEGGED the podiatrist to remove parts of the nails (on the sides down to the base), but he refused and gave me some damn worthless cream and told me to take aspirin. It took 6 years before I finally got a podiatrist to properly excise the infected parts of the nails.

If the toenails need to be removed, get them removed now, or at least the sides. Creams and whatnot do not work. If there’s an infection, it means the nail has already penetrated through the skin into the bloodstream, and that is what must be treated.

Prayers for your son in the matter.

If he is a Boy Scout then his leader has first aid supplies like gauze etc

Do not hesitate to tell his troop leader about the situation and ask for help! That is what Scouts do for Scouts! and it is not “begging” to tell your church when you need help. We are all brothers and sisters in faith.

God Bless!

I had a badly infected big toe 25 years ago ... had to have a chunk removed due to gangrene ...

This is SERIOUS ,, clean thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide , remove any dead skin , crusty mess and anything that looks bad ... find any general broad spectrum antibiotic capsule you may have (amoxicillin is good),, if you don’t have any ask the neighbors... break the capsule apart and put the powder directly into the wound.

If it looks like it’s responding you’ll be ok ,,, if there is any sign of necrosis or it doesn’t respond get to an ER.
