Russia is demanding an investigation into the alleged use of ‘chemical weapons’ against separatists in the east of Ukraine as the two countries agreed to extend their ceasefire.

Pro-separatist rebels have claimed that people showing symptoms of chlorine poisoning had been admitted to hospital following an alleged attack carried out by Ukrainian Special Forces near Slavyansk.

The accusations, which follow claims of 'phosphorous fire bombs' being dropped on villages in southeastern Ukraine this month, led to Russian diplomats urging an investigation.

‘This is horrible. This case must be investigated,’ said Russia's UN envoy Vitaly Churkin.

The Russian ambassador to Holland, Roman Kolodkin, said a complaint could be submitted to the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons amid claims that Chloropicrin was used by pro-Kiev forces. Earlier there was claims that ‘phosphorus fumes’ led to poisoning.

One rebel leader in Donetsk, Igor Strelkov, said there had been a number of cases. ‘We are collecting sample materials and are going to present them as evidence.’

The demands came as the leaders of Russia and Ukraine agreed to work towards extending a fragile ceasefire between Kiev and pro-Kremlin militias.

Maybe ceasefire translates into something else in Ukrainian.

If their buddy Assad uses chlorine in Syria, that’s fine. However, use by Ukraine may demand intervention.

So Ukraine and Syria have something in common. Use of chemical weapons.

Looks like it doesn't translate well into Russian, either.

Since the ceasefire began on June 20, a total of 27 Ukrainian servicemen have been killed and 69 wounded, a statement tweeted by the foreign ministry said.

Do you seriously think it was Assad who was using chemical weapons in Syria? It was the rebels who stood to benefit from the accusations.

Well that wouldn't happen if Kiev was at all interested in stopping their attacks......as long as they keep on firing from helicopters and bombing the East the folks there are going to fire back....

Poroshenko has done nothing but give ‘terms of surrender’....which are not negotiations....while he continues to send his militia armies and artillery on missions into Eastern Ukraine.....Until Poreshenko stands down one cannot expect those in the East to refrain from protecting their communities. And just to be clear...they so called "Ukrainian Servicemen" are made up of primarily Right Sector thugs and rogue militias. His proper military refuses to fight....and those who do go are threatened if they don't by the Right Sector thugs.

I also heard that the pro-Russian militia is made up of Sunday-school teachers, and volunteers from local puppy shelters. Never mind the Chechens and communists.

I was speaking specifically about chlorine and yes, I do think Assad’s forces have used it. They do not have to declare it among their chemical munitions. Russia does not seem to care about that, but finds a problem when accusing Ukraine of using them.

Poroshenko is to speak to the people soon today I understand....some saying he’s been preparing wording to claim Martial Law....meanwhile he’s been moving and positioning high grade firing equipment and dropping supplies to his men via parachuting at the airport.

Doesn’t sound good....

Just noting that you don’t appear to care about the separatists killing anybody, just the Ukrainian military.

the “pftt” wasn’t about them as you well know....the fact you diliberatley twist anything I say just evidences you have no opinion rather just out to pick fights...and this more times then not. That’s what bullies and creeps do. Your posting name says it best.......”rude” and “boy”..pretty much covers it.

So I’m not interested in further dialogue with you regarding anything to do with Ukraine. I’m done attempting to exchange reasonable dialogue...you simply can’t engage in that...nor as I see it are you interested in the happenings, rather seeking targets you and your friends can pile on.

I will not be responding further.

With crumbling economy and failure to deliver promised European freebies to a Maidan crowd, Poroshenko would use every opportunity to escalate this crisis.

Let me bring my perspective. I’m all for a really independent Ukraine, free from ANY outside influence. The problem is every time Ukraine gets ‘liberated’, it’s government gets rigged with all kind of foreign advisors, initiates blatant anti-Russian propaganda in it’s media, attacks Russian economic interests, including gas transit. They think they are entitled by the pipe to get free gas, favorable tariffs for their exports, billions of dollars in direct aid and so on, it is certainly not enough for them to have right enough to maintain a pipe and also have a margin just to make shareholders of transit companies happy. I think the problem is that a pipe is a milking cow for ruling elite of any affiliation and they can’t ever have enough.
Yet, obstructing gas transit and pushing their agitprop they want to keep aid coming and abolishing their favorable trading status and gas discounts counts as an economic war by Russia.
In fact if I were Putin, I would put more efforts to push for alternative pipelines and search for domestic contractors on military hardware outsourced to Ukraine than into destabilizing Ukraine right now. Let the Ukrainians who don’t want to be a part of corrupt nation immigrate and bring their skills with them and leave that sinkhole of a place to a Germans, who would never support it at the rate Russia did nor would allow it to grow on it’s own. Kiev government would collapse on it’s own anyway and if not for a Russian meddling they won’t find anyone but themselves to blame.

.....”With crumbling economy and failure to deliver promised European freebies to a Maidan crowd, Poroshenko would use every opportunity to escalate this crisis”....

He certainly would and is. ..and the “cease-fire” never was that...just a stall. The prior weeks US had sent Dept. Head of Security along with some of his people, to Kiev. To work with the National Guard, Police etc. So they just needed time to set the stage as we see it playing out now.

The US/EU/IMF have actually more to loose than Poroshenko so they're pushing hard for the East to get “Wrapped up”. Trouble for Poroshenko is he can't control the Oligarchs nor their army's.....not to mention Maidan. But he still must “appear” to be in control.

Ukraine people are the least of anyone’s concern, both in the East and throughout Ukraine, for the objective is control of land and revenues/resources and business..and we can all see that. The best Ukraine will be is a debtor state, and even that might be pushing it as the Eu and Russia seem to have abandoned what was first hoped for in the country.

Kiev likely DID NOT use chemical weapons here.

Strelkov’s updates from last week warned that the Kiev troops were bombarding the area of a detergent factory, and specifically mentioned that they came close to hitting the Chlorine tanks inside.

If there are chlorine injuries, it likely came from that.
