Over 1,000 energy firms were infected with a sophisticated cyber weapon that gave hackers access to power plant control systems, it has been revealed.
The software allows operators to monitor energy consumption in real time and to cripple physical systems such as wind turbines, gas pipelines and power plants at the click of a mouse.
Among the targets of Dragonfly were energy grid operators, major electricity generation firms, petroleum pipeline operators, and energy industry industrial equipment providers, Symantec said.
Dragonfly initially targeted defense and aviation companies in the US and Canada before shifting its focus mainly to US and European energy firms in early 2013.
Dragonfly bears the hallmarks of a state-sponsored operation, displaying a high degree of technical capability.

Thats because you don’t have the power mouse.
Doesn’t really matter because they all eventually come back to the power company and the power company is connected to the internet.
You can be skeptical all you want, but the story is available from multiple sources and no utility is denying it.
See post 18 this thread.
By the way this isn’t the first time.

Hacking group Anonymous could shut down the entire U.S. power grid, head of national security warns
Bring on the Smart Grid.
They get into classified dept of defense systems. Are utility systems more secure?
Not the ones I’ve seen and I run a security company.
Why are these systems not on a closed internal network not accessible to the internet?
If you are in ANY way connected to the internet - that is not a statement you can make with absolute certainty.
In all seriousness, I cannot BELIEVE we haven’t suffered some massive infrastructure failure as of late.
Seems like 0bama’s M.O. these days; create as much chaos as possible on a DAILY basis! Grrrrrr!
The Virtues of A Noble Woman:
16 She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong. 18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night.
How about we women-folk worry LESS about the ‘power grid’ and more about ‘girding our loins’ for BATTLE!
WOLVERINES! :)
And us guys can help u gird.
Well, THAT didn’t take long!
(I expected no less, actually, LOL!)
Well we are stronger as a team.

There are NO power plants (that I know of) that are completely segregated from the “outside”.
I’ve operated many facilities that we’re thought to be independent of the web, only to find that little one item was missed.
Most power plants rely on signals from the local RTO (regional transmission operator) telling facilities what and how much to generate. We see these signals in real time.
I can command the generators locally in my control room to do what I want, but I still need to “see” what the grid in my areas is doing.
In a nutshell- there’s no such thing as a power plant off the net.
We have to see what’s going on outside of our plant to operate. That info is running through ... Wires connected to the net.
