2013

Jimmie Johnson of Hendrick Motorsports won the race, his fourth win of the season and his first Coke Zero 400 win, rendering him the first driver since Bobby Allison in 1982 to sweep the Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 in the same year. Tony Stewart finished second and Kevin Harvick finished third.

As long as ‘Mouse’ Gordon, ‘Fat Boy’ Stewart and Jimmy Johnson do not win then I am happy. I do not dislike Jimmy Johnson and as matter of fact I like him but I do not like to see domination in any sport.

Florida gubernatorial candidate on the #98 at Daytona:

Given how frugal [Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate] Charlie Crist has tended to be with his campaign money, this surprised us, even knowing that adviser Steve Schale is a racing buff: His campaign is sponsoring [#98 Phil Parsons Racing] Ford in the Coke Zero 400. These sponsorships can cost as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars. "The campaign spent no money on this and the cost of wrapping the car was an in kind donation from a supporter who is a big NASCAR fan," said campaign spokesman Brendan Gilfillian. The car is owned by Mike Curb, Republican former California lieutenant governor and record company executive who surely knows Crist's long time political pal, Mitch Bainwol, the former head of the Recording Industry Association of America. The driver is John Wise.(Miami Herald)(7-1-2014)

Waltrip returns to the #66:

Two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip will be race the # 66 Royal Teak Collection Toyota in Saturday night’s 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway. Waltrip enters Saturday night’s race with 2001 and 2003 victories in the Daytona 500 plus a win in the 2002 July race at the World Center of Racing. In four restrictor plate races in 2013, Waltrip posted a fourth-place finish at Talladega in May and fifth-place finish at Daytona in July. Saturday marks Waltrip’s 53rd start at Daytona and 777th career Sprint Cup start.(Identity Ventures Racing)(7-1-2014)

I miss the days when BP was on ESPN Race Coverage and every Track they went to he would do a piece called "Buffet Benny" picking one local eatery and giving a Taste Tour of the place.

****************************************

School Hopes To Memorialize Benny Parsons:

While a student at little Miller's Creek High in Wilkes County (N.C.), Benny Parsons was dedicated to playing the school's baseball and football. The depth of his dedication can be measured in what he went through to attend practices. Since practice was held after class hours, this meant Benny, the student body president his senior year, missed getting to ride the school bus home-and he lived deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He had to either walk the several miles across steep ridges or else hitch-hike, hoping a kind soul would give him a lift to his family's old homeplace in a picturesque valley called Parsonsville. "It was about 5 or 6 miles if I walked," Parsons recalled in later years. "And I did that most of the time unless the weather was awful." Benny brought the same devotion to racing when he became a NASCAR driver in 1964. This led him to the Cup Series championship in 1973, 21 career victories and recognition as one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers. After retirement from the track, Parsons became an award-winning analyst of races on TV, winning an ESPY for his work. Parsons died in 2007 at age 66 of complications from cancer. Now, a school in the area of Wilkes County where he once lived is undertaking a drive to memorialize Benny. West Wilkes High, into which Miller's Creek was consolidated, plans to upgrade the broadcast booth at its football stadium and name the facility for Benny. "We think it's a fitting way to honor the legacy of an alumni who had such a successful career in both racing and broadcasting," says West Wilkes principal Wayne Shepherd. "We'd like to hear from Benny's fans who might be interested in contributing to the project." Shepherd can be reached at (336) 973-4503.(from NASCAR writer Tom Higgins)(7-1-2014)

“Florida gubernatorial candidate [Charlie Crist] on the #98 at Daytona: . . . The driver is John Wise.”

Not a good move by the Crist camp. Wise will proably be a back marker and if he stoves up the car, it will become a camapign advt for the Scott campaign.

Although I don’t know Florida election law, I have to assume this is an independent expenditure.

Also interesting info on Mike Curb’s political background. I have never heard this mentioned in Nascar broadcasts.

It is not true that the “Raiders” part in “Jana’s Raiders” stems from raiding the refrigerator and how you two could believe such a rumor is beyond me.

Record “high” low temp reading this morning - 68 degrees. Yesterday twas 38; normally we’re in the low 40’s…weather is looking better for race day. Last report I saw had just a 24% chance of a thunderstorm.

and that can't happen again.

All the rest can go pound sand.
