Guatemalan boy with white rosary found dead in Texas desert en route to a better life

Guatemala Gilberto Ramos wanted to leave his chilly mountain village for the United States to earn money to treat his mother's epilepsy.

His mother begged him not to go. "The better treatment would have been if he stayed," Cipriana Juarez Diaz said in a tearful interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. When he wouldn't relent, she draped him with a white rosary for safe passage.

A month later, his decaying body was found in the Texas desert. Now, the boy has become a symbol for the perils faced by a record flood of unaccompanied children from Central America who are crossing illegally into the U.S.

Authorities said Monday that Gilberto was 11, which would have made him one of the youngest known children to die crossing the desert. But his parents said Tuesday that Gilberto was 15.

The parents explained that they had taken several years to register his birth because of the remoteness of their village in Guatemala's northern mountains. When they did, they had forgotten Gilberto's actual birth date, so they listed the same date as his younger brother.

The boy was shirtless, having likely suffered heat stroke, but still wearing the rosary.

"He was a good son," Juarez said. "May God give me the strength to endure."

"He was a good son," Juarez said. "May God give me the strength to endure."

Where was this sentiment when you sent him to his death, Juarez?

This young man’s family can take comfort in the fact that their son gave his life for Obama’s manufactured “crisis”, and he never lets one go to waste.

What's the left worried about? The kid was just a very late term abortion. They should be rejoicing.

Any parent that would allow their child to take that trek does not get my pity. The child does for having horrible parents who sent him to his end.

He probably would have stayed home if 0bama had not deliberately encouraged him to make the trip. I feel sorry for the kid.

If those countries south of the border weren’t so corrupted they would be able to provide for their citizens rather than dumping them here for US taxpayers to pay for their “dreams” -

This kid's parents should have referred to Christ's command to “render unto Caesar”.In this case “Caesar” (the United States Government) says that the kid cannot enter the United States in that fashion.

Any parent that would allow their child to take that trek does not get my pity.... I sincerely believe he didn’t “trek”. He was bussed, pointed to the border and got lost. ORRRR, he dehydrated on the plane.

I agree with you. I feel terrible for the poor of Latin America. However, we can not be expected to absorb every person that wants to come to our country.

Had we no social safety net, we would NOT have unlimited amounts of people making their way illegally into our country. But we do. So every poverty stricken person in the World knows they will live better than 99% of the citizens in their own Hell Hole country if they can simply be put on the dole in America. Hence an open border adjacent to a Third World country like Mexico is a recipe for human disaster.
