What Are the Best Looking Beer Cans in America?
ad week ^ | 7-3-2014 | David Griner

The can comeback, led by brands like Ska Brewing, Oskar Blues and New Belgium, has opened up a 360-degree canvas for label designers typically restricted to the few stickers on a beer bottle.

Thrillest has (with the help of CraftCans.com guru and Canned! author Russ Phillips) created a handy gallery of its picks for the "10 coolest-looking beer cans in America." And while I was glad to see a few of my personal favorites on the list (including my friends and neighbors at Good People Brewing in Birmingham, Alabama), I feel like they left off a few brews that are practically works of art.

Twelve year old kids saw me drinking Buckhorn at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They wanted my empties; they collected beer cans and had never seen anyone drinking Buckhorn before. No, not even track bums...

Probably the empty ones. If they’re still full it means nobody likes it.

Rheingold’s head stays so high,
‘Cause it’s brewed extra dry,
Won’t you try extra dry Rheingold beer!

Used to love that beer. I haven’t seen it since I moved away from Eastern Ohio.

Heheh! I’m going to crop that photo and frame it. I first learned of this from friends from Pittsburgh attending classes with me in Boston. Now I can see how it earned its reputation. That is some CAN!

Funny, I haven’t bought beer in a can in at least 10 years.

Still, the bottled stuff has some pretty cool art.

I used to have a beer can with a picture of a P-3C Orion aircraft on it. It came home from Japan with me. Don’t remember what brand of beer it was, though. Wish I still had it.

You are so right! Olde Frothingslosh was a Pittsburgh Brewing product, Iron City beer inside, novelty labels outside. Originally from east Ohio not far from Pittsburgh, so all those brands sort of run together: Gennesee, Iron City, Rheingold, Rolling Rock, Duquesne, to name a few.

Still looking for the later O.F. labels: “German Schnopps” (Ach mein gosh, ist Frothingslosh!), “Italian Chianty”, “Honorable Socky”, “French Champain” (painfully evervescent)”, from around 1964.

1965 was the last year of Miss Rheingold. America’s loss.
