John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are probably the greatest western stars and are the greatest American movie heroes for many people. Vote for your favorite.

And those are the fluff ones he used to pay the bills during the roughly twenty years he was the no. 1 box office star in Hollywood. Others, such as Stagecoach, Red River, and The Searchers are not only iconic Westerns they are among the best cinematic art ever made. Sorry, Clint, but only Unforgiven comes close to meeting that standard.

John Wayne, without a doubt.

The Duke is a movie genre all by himself. Hollywood actors can be divided into two categories: John Wayne and everybody else.

Yup! My youngest son bought me a really cool but not complete blu ray set of his early years. One of the best gifts I’ve been given.

Stagecoach and The Searchers have been poping up recently on our cable.

Not a Western but another film I enjoyed was The High and The Mighty.

Hmmm...this thread has me thinking....not good as I need to get to bed.

In any case my favorite western is The Magnificent Seven. I wonder if John Wayne could have played Chris. I can almost imagine him in some of the dialogue.

Don’t get me wrong the casting was great as it was. I was just thinking...

Not a western! Unless you are referring to western Ireland.

My favorite Western movie of all time is “The Outlaw Jose Wales”.

I must have seen “Kelly’s Heroes” more times than I want to admit since I was a little boy when it came out.

Never-the-less, Clint Eastwood played a lot of characters that were like James Bond, sociopathic. John Wayne’s characters were always solidly good guys.

So I vote the Duke!

I love the older actors (Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, et al), but I'm sorry - Clint Eastwood is the best Western actor hands-down.
Even if it was only "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", but there's way more.

Like someone earlier said, it has to do with age. I am turning 50 this year, so I’ve got to go with Clint, as I have seen more of his work. One of my favorite movies is Gran Torino.

I’ve never forgiven Clint Eastwood for “The Bridges of Madison County.”

"...it has to do with age..."

I was enamored with the cowboy movie-star John Wayne when Clint was just another guy on the weekly series "Rawhide" (I'm 56).
Over the years, though, I've been won over by Clint's slowly building persona - a (slightly) more varied, complex character than The Duke.

But did you vote for the star of "Bedtime for Bonzo" for president?

"Until conservatives return to the arts instead of run from them, we will always be at a disadvantage in a liberal world."

Couldn't agree with you more. American conservatism is a solutions based philosophy; where we identify a problem we turn to free markets, human ingenuity and an appeal to universal morality to seek an answer. This is true in virtually every endeavor except the arts (and by that I include the visual arts, music, literature, cinema, etc.) For some reason, conservatives have, starting in the 20th century, willingly ceded this ground all together (with a few exceptions).

While our unique culture and distinct American civilization may be founded on traditional values, the arts are the means by which values are transmitted and related from one generation to the next. We have allowed the left to dominate this area, much to our own peril.

I have banged on about this for years. There are conservatives here who will not allow their children to appear in the high school musical because their kids will become gay. I’m not making this up. But that’s often the first step to introducing children to good music rather than the dreck they generally listen to. The parents, themselves, think that John Wayne movies are “camp” without even understanding what that word means. If I go over to Democratic Underground today, I will be assaulted by ignorant political comments. But if I go to a movie thread, I will read intelligent remarks - far more intelligent than most I read here. I’m shocked and disheartened by that. This has got to change.

I'm greedy, so I'll say "both". My favorite westerns are Hondo and The Outlaw Josey Wales. I'd hate to have to choose between them.

Two different generations, two different acting styles, two different personalities, and BOTH love America.

I love ‘em both.
