John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are probably the greatest western stars and are the greatest American movie heroes for many people. Vote for your favorite.

Hmm.. That’s a tough one.

I’d have to say Audie Murphy.

John Wayne was at his finest in “The Searchers.”

Check out “The Unforgiven” which probably features Murphy's best performance (outside of “The Red Badge of Courage”) as a cattle rancher with cowardly tendencies. John Huston always cast him as a coward - using the brilliant technique of casting against type.

Indeed. I dual majored in history and art history with a minor in studio art...while on an Army ROTC scholarship. IMHO, when taught properly, those are perhaps the two most comprehensive disciplines in the liberal arts, and while I don't work directly in either field, not a day goes by that I don't employ the research and critical thinking skills I learned and refined in my studies.

Communists of all varieties have shown how effective imagery can be in promoting their lies; just imagine if conservatives decided to make an effort to employ them to promote the truth. I saw Dinesh D'Souza's new film last night...he gets it.

I bet you if you asked “Blondie” the same question HE would choose the “Duke”.

But ole “Blondie” is a very close 2nd.

Here is a thought ... imagine if John Wayne was the top cowboy in the Whitehouse today ... how different things would be.

You will find dozens of people here who put down history and art history degrees while admiring only engineering degrees. (I think it’s mostly engineers writing in!) In fact, both of these disciplines are, as you say, wonderful tools for developing critical thinking skills. My only beef is that I had to memorize 4,000 photos of art work for my final exam only to see the 3 I had overlooked as questions. Sigh. We took most of our classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art walking through the Egyptian wing.

The National Review this month has this problem as its cover article. The main gist of the article was that we need to forget about film and concentrate on the novel...

"Clint Eastwood but I suspect it has more to do with my age than anything."

Good point. That's why I'm 'writing-in' Randolph Scott.

I went to Gettysburg College (at the time, a great place for a history degree; the department has tilted well to the left in the years since). I had access to all the museums in Baltimore, DC and Philadelphia all within a two hour drive.

And yes, I'm well aware of the disdain and scorn heaped upon liberal arts degrees around here. What is missed is that it's not the disciplines in and of themselves, rather the fact that those disciplines have been entirely ceded to the left.

And they’ve been ceded to the Left because the Left knows how very important these fields of study are.

Not a Western but another film I enjoyed was The High and The Mighty.

I've only seen this movie once but the Duke's performance and the whistling theme are firmly implanted in memory.

Since I was only six at the time it indicates the visceral impact of the movie. Whole lot of whistling going on in the school yard after that.

I think its between 2 different genertions.....Wayne was a product of an age when men acted like men. Clint is rougher in language and style. Both good in their own time...But Wayne beats him out by a little....

Then I suggest you watch Red River....Wayne as the anti-hero.

Red River is one of his best. He plays Captain Bligh in the western version of Mutiny on the Bounty. He made a career of playing anti-heroes, hero-losers (Tom Doniphin in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence)and plain heroes. Quite a career.
