Rex Reed: Melissa McCarthy Gives ‘Tammy’ Her All, but It’s Nowhere Near Enough
New York Observer ^ | July 3, 2014 | Rex Reed

Posted on 07/04/2014 11:10:56 AM PDT by EveningStar

The good news is that Tammy is not a crappy remake of the 1957 Tammy movie with Debbie Reynolds that spawned three sequels and a TV comedy series. The bad news is that this one is much worse. It’s a desperate and brainless vehicle for Melissa McCarthy, which she wrote herself, with her husband, Ben Falcone, who also directed, with all the efficiency and verve of an abandoned Volkswagen on the Jersey Turnpike. There isn’t a single shred of evidence that either of them has one iota of talent in the world of filmmaking. Tammy is not just a celebration of everything vulgar and stupid in the dumbing down of American movies. It’s a rambling, pointless and labored attempt to cash in on Ms. McCarthy’s fan base without respect for any audience with a collective IQ of 10. And it’s about as funny as a liver transplant.

seeing the TV preview ads, all I could think is that Hollyweird asked themselves -”How bad of a movie can I make?”

My sense is they’ve done a good job in that regard. Sadly, they will try again.

I am so there!

The LA Crimes raked her over the coals for repeating basically the same character in several movies.

Mixed reaction. I liked her in Bridesmaids and The Heat.

Seems like McCarthy’s last three movies have the same character .

Crazy, fat woman doing stupid things.

I enjoyed Tammy but I was born in a much simpler time. I have been a Debbie fan since I was young. I even like the song.

This was one of the best critical eviscerations I’ve ever read. Alexander Woollcott (google him) once reviewed a self published book titled, “And I Shall Make Music”. His review was “Not on my carpet, lady.”

Wow. If Zorro was a movie reviewer, he would have been Rex Reed. I’m surprised Reed is still even reviewing. He’s from the old school of professionalism, where one despises almost everything with equal flourish and destain. The way Mr. Blackwell used to be about women’s clothing.
I did find his description of Susan Sarrandon funny; “A drunken nymphomatic Grandma.”

Meh, movie critics and political pundits are the same thing in my book.

I guess that’ll teach me to wake up and eat breakfast late. I spit cereal all over the key board when I read your comment!

I hope the movie bombs and disappears, only because they stole the name of a classic movie.

Melissa McCarthy is an excellent supporting actress. She did very well in both Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who?. I just don't know about her being the lead in a feature film.

The fact that UNFUNNY Will Ferrell can still make movies proves this wrong.
