Taking in less calories than you burn will cause weight loss every time.

That is the "secret". If you are focused on limiting calories you will naturally consume more protein and veggies. Food high in carbohydrates are also calorie dense.

I’m skeptical about that the lower calorie diets . I tried weight watchers with no real results. My blood sugar went up on that diet. I switched over to a low carb diet and in 6 mos I’ve changed my HA1C from a 7.5 to a 6.4 and lost about 18 lbs. My cholesterol has remained the same. If I would get off my lazy bum after work and work out I think my results would even be better. I’m sticking with it otherwise if my sugar goes back up I’m going to have to do shots for it . No thanks. I think you just have to find out what works and stick with it.

Re: Cravings for pasta and mashed potatoes

Cravings occur because your body isn't getting something it needs. This often happens because of the ways foods are processed and prepared.

I got past the cravings you describe with high-quality simply prepared choices. A baked sweet potato with Smart Balance as a topping is a good choice. Whole grains with no added cornsyrup, extra gluten other things with no nutritional value are satisfying. Brown rice, whole wheat cereals, many German breads and pasta with all-natural tomato sauce are good choices. The mashed potatoes with the skins included would probably be satisfying.

The trick for everyone is keeping calories low enough, but with the balance that works for them.

I hate to refute that, but I can fast for a week and lose nothing. I’ve tried it over and again, and this is while working as a nurse, so I am not sitting around doing nothing. For another 5 years I ate less than 1000 calories per day and could not lose weight. So, calorie counting can be very frustrating.

This is a good note...NOT eating will help you STORE weight. Eating right will burn calories. Exercise is a part of this to build muscle so you can start your metabolism engine. Building muscle helps burn fat.

Shery, if you maintain the same calorie intake you will NOT lose weight you will "MAINTAIN" a weight. Proper exercise has to be part of the diet lifestyle change...Walking is a great exercise along with a short calisthenics routine.

Small steps.

This is so true. We have laid off the carbs and started drinking the canary seed milk every evening. Its a natural weight loss supplement and it will lower your blood sugar and flush fat out of the body and arteries. Its high in protein and calcium. We have both lost quite a bit of weight and we feel better.

This is the diet people used to eat until the USDA started selling positions on their fraudulent "food pyramid" to the highest bidder.

I do an avocado every day as well. And lots of tomatoes.

My attempts to give up beer were a miserable failure. I regulate my intake by buying beer I can’t afford to drink a lot of (Chimay, preferably).
