Neymar Returns to Brazil Camp in Ambulance
The 22-year-old striker was kneed by Colombia defender Juan Camilo Zuniga late in the second half at the Arena Castelao, fracturing his third vertebra.

He was carried off the field in tears on a stretcher and "screamed in pain in the dressing room" before being taken to the hospital, the Brazilian confederation said in a statement early Saturday.

Shame.

The Dutch are too strong for Costa Rica.

For the fourth successive World Cup and the 13th in 20 appearances all-time, the Germans advanced to the semifinals here Friday, beating France 1-0 on a scorching afternoon at the Maracanã Stadium. The breakthrough for the Germans came just 12 minutes in. Toni Kroos whipped a free kick into the penalty box, Mats Hummels outmuscled Raphaël Varane to put his head on the cross and direct it toward the right corner. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar and fell into the net. Hugo Lloris, the French goalkeeper, barely moved.

Related to your selfish shameful interest other than that of your country...

Though it might seem not obvious at first sight, the worlds of football and comic books have quite a few things in common, namely heroes and villains and the vital ingredients of suspense, excitement and improbable deeds.

And just like cartoon heroes, the invincibles of world football also have their weak spots. Lionel Messi is a case in point. The saviour of Argentina at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, La Pulga will come face to face with his very own Achilles heel this Saturday at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia, where Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois will be doing his level best to keep Messi goalless for the eighth time is as many meetings.

What is your point? I mentioned the copyrighted characters’ issue to point out that the cartoonist could be in a world of hurt if DC goes after them. Like many Americans, I read comics when I was a kid. Comics, like soccer, promote socialism, and you can burn every comic on the planet for all I care.

I was really, really angered by Zuniga’s foul on Neymar - and they didn't even call it. Zuniga wasn't even looking at the ball, and could have paralyzed Neymar with that move. The referring was horrible. This is futbol, not the NFL.

The ref in that match was horrible. He should have issued a few yellow cards early on, and the rough tackling of Neymar throughout the match would have been averted.

It seems that the refs who do not tolerate fouls early have much smoother sailing the rest of the way; and I think the players prefer it that way. It sure makes the matches more enjoyable to watch.

Heartbreaking injury for Neymar and Brasil. I kept watching the video of the incident, but I can’t make out anything other than a lack of regard for the other player on part of Zuniga. Shameful, but it didn’t look planned, just brutal ignorance. Really, the very last thing we needed for the relationship between my family and friends.

I may have seen it differently. Thanks for your perspective on it. So it did look intentional? I was very afraid of that. Heartbreaking and shameful. Prayers for Neymar, I hope this is something that can be addressed with some of the newer, less invasive techniques. I want to see him back at 100% ASAP.

And if it was in any degree intentional, Zuniga should burn for it.

It’s really tough to say—personally I think it was closer to negligent than intentional. Did the player intentionally put his knee up? Yes. Did he know he was going to make contact? Yes. Did he deliberately try to injure? No, in my opinion.

Agreed: Objectively, fouls on both sides. That referee messed that game up. The referee may well be instructed on how to officiate that match by FIFA, don’t give out many yellow cards.

Doesn’t matter how I see the game, listen to what the pundits say, even ones from Brazil, they may well not approve of the performance yesterday.

For the record, Brazil had 27-31 fouls per varying sources, Colombia at 22 I saw in one place.

Other than this, the energy level in that match was very high.

Neymar’s injury means he will have to be “immobilized” in that area, that prognosis came out rather quick, he won’t need surgery.

Brazil committed 31 fouls as they edged a 2-1 win over Colombia in Fortaleza to set up a semi-final against Germany. Their South American rivals made 23 fouls in a scrappy game.

BBC Pundits on Brazil/Colombia match

Though Neymar's injury is what is taken-away from this match the most, I've got to say Brazil from all accounts and I've read elsewhere, is the team that seemed to have played a much more physical match and had the most fouls.

Rodriguez: The Referee Didn't Help Much

The referee lost some control of the game, not as bad as some games I've seen. That game had a very high energy level as well.

World Cup only comes along once every 4 years.

Belgium, hasn’t scored until last 20 minutes of their group stage games. Against the USA, they didn’t score at all in the last 20 minutes and we had the excellent chance with Wondolowski in the 92nd minute where we could have won. That one stat of Belgium is a bit worrisome if one is for Belgium.

Thank you for your great World Cup posts. It’s a perfect way to get updates.

If I had a time machine, I’d take us back to 1974, and invite you to Toni’s Schnell-im-Biss at the corner of Kadettenweg and Finckensteinallee, for an order of curry wurst. The only beer Toni sold was Berliner Kindl in bottles.

The Schnell-im-Biss was near the main gate of what was then called Andrews Barracks, the former Preussiche Kadetten Anstalt.
