One bone to pick: I don’t think it was intentional or malicious, either (his words). But negligent? Probably.

Philipp Lahm 'especially sorry' Neymar will be missing for Brazil
Brazil captain Thiago Silva will also miss the game through suspension, but rather than revel in the prospect of facing a weakened Brazil side, Lahm has said that it will be a shame not to face the hosts at full strength.

"First of all, it is a pity that both are missing," he is quoted as telling Bild am Sonntag by Goal.com.

"I'm especially sorry for Neymar. To miss a semi-final at a home World Cup through injury is a bitter blow.

"In a World Cup you always intend to compete with the best. That's why I would have preferred to play against Brazil with Neymar, but I believe that Brazil has enough players who can step into the breach for him."

Brazil and Germany will face each other in the first World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

The conduct got out of hand...

The ref from Spain didn’t want give cards so players wouldn’t miss the semifinal. But now look who is missing!

I can’t get too worked up for Neymar. I thought he gave off a lot of Eddie Haskell vibes in the matches I’ve seen him in.

There is a new rule that resets cards before the final, so no players will miss out playing. The next games could be bloodbaths, especially the Brazilians - imo.

You’re right. The ref needed to card the players for the benefit of the game.

Never mind the beautiful game: Brazil learns to win ugly at the World Cup
“We had a plan and stuck with it: the World Cup was a short competition and we wanted to win it with the talents we had at hand. I still hear we didn’t play beautiful football. But what is beauty? To me it’s to be efficient. We were unbeaten champions and that will never change.”

Argentina 1 Belgium 0
This team burst through a psychological barrier in overcoming a becalmed Belgium. Where the last eight has seen La Albiceleste stumble too often in recent tournaments, now they will contest a semi-final for the first time in 24 years. São Paulo should brace itself for an invasion.

Holland break Costa Rica hearts with penalty shootout victory
Van Gaal, sporting a lucky bracelet given to him by Dutch schoolchildren, left the field wearing the air of a man who had planned the outcome all along. He had said before the match he would wear it for three more games. One down, two to go.

According to the Daily Mirror, should Costa Rica beat Netherlands in their World Cup quarter-final on Saturday or take the game into extra time, then England, who arrived in Brazil ranked 10th in the world, will drop to 20th.
