Abortion physician Dennis Christensen wants to retire. But he can't, the 71-year-old says, because no one wants to take over his Milwaukee clinic, a condition he set for himself for retirement.
Christensen and his professional partner, Bernard Smith, both of whom have performed abortions for more than four decades, hope they can hand over the reins of the Affiliated Medical Center to younger physicians, but so far no one has come forward.
An ongoing lawsuit over a new state requirement for doctors who perform abortions could leave that process more rigorous and less likely to happen.
"I have always felt that this is a worthwhile endeavor and a necessary one," Christensen said. "And there aren't too many people who will do it."
Abortion opponents disagree. Supporters of the recent state law think doctors like Christensen should be held to a higher standard if they want to work with patients.
And with a federal judge considering whether the state can require hospital admitting privileges of doctors who provide abortions, Affiliated may soon have to close its doors.
Barbara Lyons, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life, said the admitting privileges requirement did not aim to restrict access to abortion, but to promote the safety of the procedures.
"The goal always was and continues to be to protect the care of women," Lyons said. "It's important that the care before, during and after the procedure be from one provider."
But Gretchen Borchelt, a director of health policy at the National Women's Law Center, said the requirements "are not about enhancing women's safety or protecting women's health. They're about shutting down abortion clinics."

Gee, maybe some of those aborted babies would have grown up to be abortion doctors??
Kinda funny how that works eh? Or doesn’t work?
Not enough people who want a career murdering babies? That’s a surprise.
“Not enough people who want a career murdering babies? Thats a surprise.”
More like “What a relief!!”
That's really odd, because you can usually find people who want to undertake worthwhile endeavors, even if the pay is little or nothing. And here's a very lucrative occupation that nobody wants.
Why, it's almost as if the majority recognizes that killing babies is evil!
I am suppose to feel the pain of this abortion doctor being unable to retire? Perhaps I might if they felt the pain of the aborted or the pains of Hell awaiting. Severe prayers for Repentance are in order here.
Abortionists live unhappy lives. Med school students largely elect not to live with the many discomforts, unless they are at the bottom of the class with no options.
Now if old collectivists would also grow old and die off...
When you're on a date with a woman, even a liberal woman, and she asks you what you do for a living, who really wants to say "I'm an abortionist"?
Would even a liberal feminist mom gush to her friends about "my son, the abortionist"?
1. True believer psychopaths, on par with Josef Mengele
2. Broken physicians (drug addicts, those unable to board certify in anything, have legal issues that make them pariahs to regular employment)
The Left has for years pushed to force doctors to perform abortions as a requirement to getting licensed.
Yep. These guys never seem to have trouble recruiting ...
"My son, the Navy SEAL" sounds a whole lot better than "My son, the abortionist".
Now there's a cause for concern: it looks like 16% of the clinics have been left to operate untouched, with no one to try to turn souls away from the path of death.
We've got to do better.
And as for this doctor? May God save this wretch. I hope for him what I would hope for myself, in his condition: a heart-wrenching conversion, and the rest of his life in penitential tears.
Right, youd think a doc could put 2 & 2 together....but apparently not. Lots of clueless these days....BUT they claim to be our betters and guides for all us unwashed blind types.
It might be interesting to ask a man who is pro-abortion if he would consider training to be an abortionist, given the great need (and high pay). And if not, why not?
After all, if there is a “right” to abortion, then someone has a duty to perform abortions ... and why not you? (Rhetorical you, not you-you.)
“My son, the pot-smoking emo guitarist” sounds better than “my son, the abortionist.”
Put that way, “my son, the drunken skid-row bum” sounds better than “my son, the abortionist”.
Yes, that too. For the record, my son does not smoke pot, and he’d probably be annoyed if he knew I described his guitar-playing as “emo.”
He’s a reasonably successful college student, planning a career in finance ... but being a Navy SEAL would have been okay, too.
I was replying to the ease of finding folks to do worthwhile endeavors. Becoming a Navy SEAL is a worthwhile endeavor, loaded with personal danger and for not particularly great pay. AND it's bloody well difficult to accomplish. Yet the Navy has no trouble finding people willing to try.
Then we have this abortionist puling about how hard it is to find a successor. It's a relatively easy thing to do, and pays well (apparently). BUT ... he can't find anyone who wants the job.
Very telling, IMO.
I agree with you.
Baby murder needed.
Must have no conscience.
Must not love children.

Good news. Imagine how many babies those 2 have killed over 40 years. They may be the worst serial killers in US history...
In NYC med students are REQUIRED to perform abortions as part of their training.
I thought performing abortions was at the discretion (or lack thereof) of the individual doctor. I didn’t realize that being an abortionist is seen as a specialty. Is that what the elderly doctor is saying here, that 80% of what he does is abortion related? If that’s the case, no wonder few young doctors want that distinction.
If he is feeling such pain, how about voluntary euthanasia.
A fitting, and ironic ending.
But you are right about Hell awaiting, and the redemptive power of Repentance.
