Unedited Britney Spears Song Without Auto-Tune Leaks And It's Painful
Business Insider ^ | 07/08/2014 | Aly Weisman

No one ever thought Britney Spears' songs were untouched in the recording studio, but the singer's voice without Auto-Tune is even worse than we could have imagined.

On July 2, the unedited vocal version of Spears' track "Alien," off her most recent album, "Britney Jean," leaked — and it ain't pretty. Take a listen:

CLICK ABOVE LINK FOR THE VIDEO...

The video has picked up so much steam online that the song's producer, William Orbit, posted a statement to Facebook explaining that the track is from a vocal warm-up session, not a final take.

Which just shows you that pop stars today are signed, groomed and promoted on the basis of looks and image. Hire a few songwriters, musicians and rent a state of the art studio and anybody can be made to sound good. It’s why most of these pop stars all sound the same.

It sounds like the audio was auto-detuned. It has that weird sound you get when you play a record backwards. The “photo” of her is SO reworked it looks like it came from a Playstation game.

I like it.

There is a copy of the released song below, it’s not a rock anthem or anything but it’s nice enough.

I say it is a medium hit.

I like her for some reason. Seems to have grounded herself quite a bit in the last few years. Can’t be more offensive than the rest of the crap that passes for music these days.

Has Britney ever sang the Star Spangled Banner LIVE, with no lip syncing?

THAT would be one good test to see if she can still sing.

That’s so funny! It’s personal, really. I remember when me and some buddies when we were overseas in the military were going to go to the base theater to see “WOODSTOCK” the movie when it first came out.

One of the guys that had just flew in on the island had brought a square of hash wrapped in tinfoil in his wallet, and we planned to smoke it before seeing the movie.

We did, and I sat there in that movie, and the music was gargantuan! Birdsong Melodious!.....I particularly remember “Wooden Ships” by CSN. Sweetest thing I’d ever heard - perfectly in tune!. That pretty much squared me off that the Hippie, Love, Dove movement was nothing but drugged out nothing.

Years later, I watched the same movie and the same song “Wooden....” and I just refused to believe they were the same!........

I guess that’s what this new-fangled “auto-tune” does. Damndest thing I ever heard.....

What's the big deal? She's in the process of warming up and the sound guys are adjusting their equipment. I can't just wake up in the morning and start singing. I've got to warm up, stretch those vocal chords, etc.

I don't like this lady as a human and have never heard her music till now, but this is much ado about nothing. Hardly worth posting.

Sorry, not buying it. My wife is a degreed vocalist who has taught music and voice for 20 years. I have never heard her warm up by cold singing the song she is going perform or record. If it is early in the morning, she will do vocal exercises and drink warm tea. Only once she is warmed up enough will she start singing the actual song. Every one of her friends and colleagues do something very similar.

It's not really her voice, it's her pitch control. It ain't there. Warmed up or not. It's not like she is missing trying to hit the high end of her range. Thus the need for autotune. Just another example of how devoid of talent most current hip hop is.

I use to sing semi-professsional.

I put out all kinds of notes while working out a song but, the final is on key and time.

I make up stuff as I work a song out that many times sounds like I can’t carry a note in a back pack but, there is no way I’d need AutoTune for a final product.

Go listen to any studio outakes for popular artists of the 60’s and 70’s. You’ll hear all kinds of “Ain’t right” and then the final version as the artist works out where they’d like to take the song.

I saw her once on Saturday Night Live many years ago trying to sing without autotune and she was horrible.

It was after she had been caught lipsyncing and I guess she wanted to prove she could sing. She cannot. Most of the people you see on the covers of the magazines at the supermarket who are “singers” can sing.

With or without autotune that song is terrible.

For me, the best test of a singer is if they can do their songs if, say, the power goes out or they do a set without all the glitz and visuals and amplification. Case in point: At a Queen concert, Freddy and Brian did an acoustic set, just the two of them, on top of this elevated platform. It was great.

Poor Britney. She should study Jo Stafford for vocal lessons so she sounds less like Darlene Edwards. (Do a youtube search for Darlene Edwards. I dare ya.)

This isn’t new info...when she was on the Mouse channel there were times that tape came out of her ‘singing’ .... and it clearly had no auto tune. It is one of the reasons that I dislike most of the ‘entertainers’ who are coming up these days....they don’t have honest voices.... a few do but most are products of the old mix master

RE: It’s the same on American Idol, I expect. All those fab singers are digitally enhanced?

Actually it is NOT the same as American idol.

Those who compete in that contest go through a grueling audition process, initially WITHOUT any backup music.

I highly doubt that an unknown Britney Spears can even get through when she auditions.

When you remove the music from the QUEEN song, “Under Pressure” it sounds like a convention of manic depressives.

Which I guess is what the point of the music is :)

That is true, but I have been told (complete hearsay) that she uses pitch correction in concert. Very different from autotune. Fake but accurate, in that the voice itself it unchanged, it just nudges the pitch sharp or flat as needed.

It will be interesting to see how she moves past that wide eyed teenager thing she has done to perfection. But she gets a pass from me for the reasons you mention - she plays her own guitar (a Taylor of all things) and does her own writing, she is not waiting for the Nashville Hit Consortium to send her her next hit song, culled from a Monday morning songwriting session with 4 guys and a rhyming dictionary.

That’s what auto tune does. It nudges the voice sharp or flat as needed. Just like “pitch correction”. Both end up with weird sounding vocals when the pitch is adjusted too much. We used to call those weird sounds “artifacts”. In the old days you would process it repeatedly.... moving the pitch a small amount each time on the areas that were “way out”.... trying to avoid the “artifacts”. These days the artifacts are just part of the vocal. Artifacts begin to surface when you try to move the pitch more than 1/2 of a semitone. The more you adjust the pitch, the more artifacts you hear. It also makes a difference how fast you adjust the pitch. If it is a note that is held and you have time to slide it up gently (like an actual voice might do) you have better results. If the processor is set to a quick adjust, you will hear the obvious sounds that it has been “tuned”. Every album is tuned in this day and age. All of them. Most singers use it while performing live.

I have admittedly minimal acquaintance with either, although the guy who recorded my band’s cd demonstrated pitch correction in protools for me. We did not use it. I guess I think of autotune as pitch correction with other varieties of signal processing.

Thankfully, in the modern acoustic world, in the roots rock world, and in the jazz world, authenticity is still the name of the game - though it would not surprise me if some of the jazz vocalists use pitch correction - so I don’t see a lot of it when I go out to shows. But rarely am I at a venue of >2500 people, and usually smaller than that.

Not a “pop” singer per se, more rock, sort of goth/hard alternative rock at that, but IMO one of the best voices currently around – Amy Lee of Evanesance. She not only has a range and a powerful voice, can belt out heck out of the high notes, she also has a lot of control even when signing softly and in the lower keys. I love her voice and evidently she doesn’t need any “auto-tune”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z1_Lh8-Y_Y

And while she is better known for belting out hard rock songs like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahAQxFrEK3Y

And this, sort of a commentary of pop music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u55fpsbzAfk

She can also sing other styles of music including “country”.
