Yellowstone Closes Road Because It's Melting (What a world, what a world)
Newser ^ | July 20, 2014 | John Johnson

Posted on 07/10/2014 9:53:46 PM PDT by Enterprise

You'll never guess why "Firehole Lake Drive" is temporarily off-limits to tourists in Yellowstone National Park. Yes, the popular 3.3-mile loop is closed for a while because the asphalt is melting, reports National Parks Traveler. "Extreme heat from surrounding thermal areas has caused thick oil to bubble to the surface, damaging the blacktop and creating unsafe driving conditions," says a park release. While that kind of thing isn't uncommon given Yellowstone's geology, the damage to the road is "unusually severe," reports the AP.

Also: "The park wants non-motorists to stay away from the region as well, because soil that looks solid to a hiker might give way to scalding water below."

Ok, you don't have to tell me TWICE!

Above our paygrade.

However... volcanic ash does bode well for vine-culture. I'm going to get some grape vines and oak barrels.

Life gives you lemons, make margaritas, life gives you volcanic ash, make wine. Worked for the Italians.

Didn't say that. I'll do the best I can, and look for potential benefits, however tenuous. I left out the part about digging out from 3 meters of ash here, and where, perzactly, I would put that. But we could use more hills.

The one good thing that would probably happen would be to wipe out the ethanol corn and the property they grow it on for a period of time!!!

The last time I was there (last fall), I purposefully and carefully checked the temperature under one of these “boardwalks”. Let’s just say I wanted to get a feel for it.

There was steam coming up all around, yet the water where I checked was cool.

I’ve taken trails in the back areas of Yellowstone to some of these smokestack or chimney geysers, and have looked down the stack - hoping they wouldn’t be spouting off at the same time I was looking down them. I was walking very gingerly on the ground around them, making sure I wasn’t going to fall through a thin crust, either ... :-) ...

I couldn’t find a good picture of one, or I would have included it here.

The only problem with that is, last time the caldera erupted, it put down nearly a meter of ash. Once that gets wet, it essentially turns to concrete. Kind of tuff (heh) to grow things in. It would probably take at least a century of freeze-thaw to break it up enough to start things growing again.

No. I didn't miss your point. I just don't care to leave. I won't be going to Mexico.

My G-G-G-Grandparents took the best part of Mexico here and called it Texas.

I don't want to run south. It would suck worse than going to New Mexico. Or Europe.

I'm not being dense, I'm being obnoxious. ;)

Did you sleep through the last few months? We've got labor coming up. They can break it up.

You decide whether I'm joking or not.

I know which way I would bet. I don't have a century left in me.

Besides, Mt. St. Helen didn't take a century to grow 12" pines. History mean anything to you?
