Sorry for his family, but the Ramones were just a useless punk rock band that did nothing of consequence, music wise. They were just loud fast annoying crap. I wanted to plug my ears every time they came on the radio. I prefer many other bands over them in the '80's, even the one hit wonders who actually wrote melodic rock.

The Ramones and Sex Pistols sucked.

One of the last times my stepdaughter rode in my car before she passed away, we were jokingly singing along to “I Wanna Be Sedated”.

They did a lot more, music wise, than you!

At least it wasn’t disco.

Thank goodness for that.

The Ramones and their ilk served notice on the world that disco was dead, that the overblown nonsense of the English "progressive" bands had run its course, and people just wanted to get back to good 'ol rock'n'roll.

RIP Tommy.

Thanks.
At least I laugh about how horrifically silly we sounded going down the road.
I still stumble through the song when it comes on.

I’m old enough to have referred to The Ramones et al as “punks” when it was still a term of derision among musicians. At the time I was playing ProgRock and had no use for the noise and anger of that form of “music”.
Over the years, I came to a greater appreciation of the genre and now know that The Ramones were, indeed, ground-breaking in their way. I still do not prefer to listen to very much if any punk music and still consider it to be crude and unfocused.
Rest In Peace, Tommy Ramone. You need it!

Yes, they were rough-edged, but that was part of their stage presence. The Ramones filled a need for that unvarnished, ungilded type of rock unified by it’s wild guitar riffs, and a feigned distain for societies conventions. Every new generation of teens will look for a standard bearer of their angst and their brand of significance. In the late 70s and early 80s many kids were still reacting to the strong influences of the Beatles very mellow or esoteric type of music. Lou Reed’s style as in the New York Dolls or Velvet Underground was gaining strength and devotees. Some folks turned to what I call the Symphonic Goth music of The Cure. I liked disco, for what is was, which was a way to enjoy being out dancing with others. I never felt one had to choose only one kind of music to like, and thus spend energy
on hating or criticizing all other types.

"What bands are you talking about that actually wrote melodic rock."

In that day, thinking Cars, Bondie, Boston, Steve Miller Band, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Skynard, etc. They wrote, produced, and played actual songs that still live on today in many jukeboxes. The Ramones were noise, and worse was the Sex Pistols. You rarely hear them because they had no soul - just angst that appealed to some teenagers. You rarely even hear Nirvana that was a re-constituted punk band. Nothing new there either.

Didn't the Ramones come out right when Disco was first becoming popular?

Good for you. Enjoy what you will. We all have our musical tastes, but the Ramones were just an over-hyped punk rock group that were promoted by their producer at a time they showed a difference from the mellow California sound (think Fleetwood Mac and others above). They don't have one song that will stand the test of time. Show me one song on a jukebox by the Ramones.
