Scientists ‘Have No Handle On’ Radio Bursts Coming From Deep Space
CBSTampaBay ^ | 11 jUL 2014 | Benjamin Fearnow

Arecibo, Puerto Rico (CBS TAMPA) – A succinct blip of radio waves detected from far beyond the Milky Way Galaxy amid deep space has left scientists saying they “really have no handle on” the mysterious “fast radio burst.” The split-second burst of radio waves discovered through the Arecibo radio telescope has given scientists new evidence of the rare, mysterious pulses emanating from deep outer space – well beyond the ends of the galaxy. Published July 10 in The Astrophysical Journal, the “fast radio burst” is the first of similar sounds to be detected by an installation other than the Parkes radio telescope in Australia...

Probably more alien “toddlers” seeking refuge in the U.S. Trying to make contact with the U.S. Boarder Patrol to see if their rooms are ready.

A few millisecond burst sure sounds more electronic glitch in nature than cosmic.
If two radio telescopes pick them up at the same time, then you got something, so far that hasn't happened.

How can they tell that the radio bursts are originating outside the galaxy? The direction, maybe?

The article mentions that the burst were discovered by the radio telescope at Arecibo. I was there a few years ago, and I recommend the trip to anyone going to PR. It takes a bit winding through West Virginia like back roads up and down ridges and through small hollows to get there, but it is worth it. The scale of the telescope is so breathtakingly immense that it is not properly conveyed in film or on television. And even though it is no longer on the cutting edge of radio astronomy, it just feels as if it would be the first place to make contact.

Yes. The Arecibo dish is extremely directional, so it must be aimed precisely at what you want to observe (through a combination of moving the feedpoint and waiting until the earth rotates it to the desired orientation).

if its radio waves from outside the galaxy it has to be of crazy old origin, it would take that long, maybe billions of years, for something to get here at the speed of radio. even if it was FM, not AM

People of the Earth can you hear me?
Came a voice from the sky on that magical night
And in the colors of a thousand sunsets
They traveled through the world on a silvery light
The people of the Earth stood waiting
Watching as the ships came one by one
Setting fire to the sky as they landed
Carrying to the world children of the sun......

It also sounds like a really fun place to have a drone and some transmitting equipment. :) Imagine the fun one could have with a few millisecond bursts.

This is at least the fourth time this particular magazine cover (with the Flying Saucer) has been posted today, all for different stories. Was this image featured in a recent movie or cable show?

The Arecibo radio telescope in Porto Rico and the Parkes radio telescope in Australia are situated such that they aren't able to point in the same direction at the same time. Arecibo is (18° 20' 33" N) above the equator and (66° 44' 57" W) of the prime meridian. Parks is (32° 59' 43" S) below the equator and (148° 16' 4.4" E) of the prime meridian.

Yup, know all that, LOL.

What I'm saying is that an extremely short (a few milliseconds) burst needs to be confirmed by two independent radio telescopes, at the same time, in order to eliminate electronic noise/glitch in the equipment.

I do realize that is a tall order and would occur strictly by accident probably.

I wouldn't mind seeing images of the two different bursts displayed on an oscilloscope showing the exact timing (duration) of each and characteristics of each as the amplitude ramps up.

Would like to see what is the next fastest burst, ever recorded of a proven cosmic event, for comparison purposes.

Some folks are interested in that type of exact detail.

Really enjoy weird scientific anomalies more than *same old, same old* easily explainable or possibly explainable events.

Regards :)

To: W.

Back in the day, 70’s, when CB’s were big, a police officer I knew was working I-35 in Selma, TX, told me about another officer on the force.

Seems this other officer would use his patrol car CB to dupe speeders into speeding through Selma and he would stop them and issue a ticket.

One night my friend was riding with the officer as he was giving his “bear-free all the way into San Antonio” call on channel 9 to some guy on the CB, and the guy zoomed through and the officer stopped him.

The officer walked up to the car and with a smirk said; “Good evening, I am ‘Choirboy’*. . .let me see your license.”

The driver replied with; “Hi, I’m XXXXX with the FCC, let me see YOURS”

The police officer was let off with a warning. . .and never lived that down.

(’Choirboy’ was taken from the Joseph Wambaugh book, “The CHoirboys”).
