...Williams is talking about a federal tax on diesel fuel, which has been unchanged since 1993 – 21 years ago.

At a recent Beltway conference with transportation executives, Anthony Foxx, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, and Vice President Joe Biden and other White House staffers met with Williams and several dozen trucking CEOs. The event was hosted by Business Forward, an advocacy group, headquartered in Washington D.C.

The crux of the meeting was an ambitious $302 billion Grow America Act, a piece of legislation which would increase funding to Highway and Trust Fund. Suddenly governor’s and local legislators in Arkansas have their ears and eyes raised towards Washington D.C. looking for some help and assurances.

Taxed Enough Already.

When was the last time a tax was reduced, or eliminated?

That's a reasonable question.

Off the cuff I'd say we should do three things, and in this order:

1. Direct 100% of fuel taxes to roads, primarily construction and repair.

2. Cut such taxes to 50% of todays level.

3. Overages in collections be 'refunded' through further reductions of tax levels.

By way of example, I believe 80% of MN road taxes are directed to light rail and other mass transit systems this year.

Eliminate the EPA, Interior Department, Education Department, Bureau of Indian affairs, the Legal services corporation, PBS, the Energy Department, Head Start, freeze Federal hiring, and reduce all federal government agency funding by 10 percent across the board the first year, then five percent every year there after until the budget is balanced. That would be a start.

Missouri-DOT is suggesting a proposed new tax would help pay for light rail in KC and St. L., and letting truckers skate.
Big users of highways (semi trucks) need to belly up !
Damned if I'll vote for this...

I drive for a VERY large beverage company NOT named Pepsi.

If fuel taxes are raised EVERY trucking company in America will pass their increased fuel costs DIRECTLY to the customer in the form of higher costs for products as well as delivery.

These fuel tax hikes is actually a DIRECT tax at the middle/working class....not the poor who don’t drive as well as the wealthy who could care less.

Please, they do not have a revenue problem.

There are 2 things that should be done in this country.

1. END ALL Public Employee unions. ALL OF THEM.

2. No post office benes for elected officials. No pensions, no healthcare, the pres and family can have secret service protection for some period of time, not to exceed maybe 4 years. Other than that: NOTHING.

Cut the staffing numbers and the pay for those jobs which will no longer be unionized.

See how much money we save that way and then talk to me about getting one red cent more out of me. Or try and get blood from a stone, because you’ll have about as much success.

I don’t know how it is in the Ozarks, but here in Taxifornia, our Highway “Trust” (hah!) Fund has been routinely raided by politicians for all sorts of other projects, transportation related or not.

I would like to see 100% of fuel taxes and vehicle registration fees go to maintaining the highway infrastructure. Vehicle license fees were doubled, the doubled again recently.

Additionally, we’ve had road lanes actually reduced to add bike lanes of both sides of most roads, AND build dedicated bike paths adjacent to these lanes on many roads and bridges.

Guess what vehicles pay ZERO in fuel taxes, and are not registered or licensed? Because cars are evil, and bicycle riders are morally superior.

Insanity.

A couple of years ago, Missouri voters passed an amendment that mandated 100 percent of fuel tax be dedicated to roads and bridges.

Suddenly, MO-DOT got religion and followed the intent of this plebiscite. Today, they're wondering away with stupid light rail in KC and ST. L. Millions more for municipal airport runways...

Insanity !

“What would you suggest to fund highway repairs ?”

Get the federal government totally out of transportation funding and regulation. Eliminate the federal Department of Transportation and the federal highway trust fund. Eliminate the federal tax on highway fuels. Let the states and private toll roads be responsible for funding and executing highway construction and repair.
