Texas may have it all, but they won’t get Santa Anna’s leg - (Illinois vs. Texas)
Illinois Watchdog ^ | June 9, 2014 | Scott Reeder

First those Texans took our jobs.

Then they took our money.

Well, to be precise, Mexican Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna’s leg. A group of Illinois soldiers stole it fair and square – back in 1845.

During the U.S. war with Mexico, Santa Anna skedaddled from the battle on a donkey and left his prosthetic leg behind in a carriage along with a bag of gold and a freshly cooked chicken.

A group of Illinois soldiers ate the chicken, gave the Army the gold and kept the leg.

One of the soldiers traveled about Illinois charging 10 cents for a peek at the appendage.

Ah, those were the days, when entrepreneurship reigned supreme in the Prairie State.

But today we are hobbled by high taxes, crippled by debt and staggered with high unemployment.

Texas, on the other hand, has pulled itself up by the bootstrap.

The Lone Star State has no income tax. Its unemployment rate is among the lowest in the country. And the state is running a surplus.

And they have accomplished much of this at the expense of Illinois.

Between 1995 and 2010, $2 billion in personal income shifted from the Land of Lincoln to Lone Star State according to “How Money Walks” by Travis Brown.

In fact, National Review noted earlier this year that more people people wer moving out of Illinois than any other state but Rhode Island.

By contrast, Texas’ population grew 5.2 percent between 2010 and 2013, a higher percentage than anywhere but tiny North Dakota and Washington, D.C.

But, cheer up, folks. We’ve still got the leg.

And Texas wants it...

I’m stumped as to why they would have wanted it in the first place...

This is pretty funny. I didn’t think Illinois had any writing talent left when Mike Ryoko passed.

Well — that means that Illinois remains one leg up on Texas.

First, nice pun.

Second ... why want it?

It’s a war trophy: bragging rights and a great big FU to Santa Ana. And then there’s ten cents a peek to look at it. In 1845. When ten cents was actually worth something.

Maybe they could trade the leg for LBJ’s hemorrhoids
now that would be worth something. Probably build
a shrine for them in Chicago...charge democrats a buck
a piece just to look at them.

What was that failed raid into Mexico that some Texans did in the 1980s, to recover an artifact or flag?

They don’t have a leg to stand on

They got about as much chance in this as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest!

Great-great grandpa and a cousin were a couple of the scouts who captured Santa Anna. If gramps had had his way the guy would have been shot dead on the spot and history would have never known what happened to him. That leg was lost in Mexico and has absolutely nothing to do with Texas history. Other than maybe 3 liberal ninnies on the board of the museum, who don’t know history from their behinds, no one in Texas wants it. Illinois can have the old moldy thing.

Here’s a great wild and wooly read on the Battle of Bexar and the Battle of San Jacinto with Santa Anna’s capture: http://www.jstor.org/stable/27784906?seq=1
