Box Office Down; Anti-Obama 'Purge' Rules, 'Sex Tape' Bombs
Big Hollywood ^ | 7/19/2014 | John Nolte

Posted on 07/19/2014 8:06:16 AM PDT by markomalley

According to Nikki Finke the weekend box office is not only refusing to recover, it has slipped even further behind with a stunning 29% drop over last year. Despite all the industry happy talk around "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the sequel opened well below where other under-performers have this summer and has no dropped 53% from last weekend.

"Dawn" will do fine, no question, but within the context of what this summer needs, it is nothing close to a savior, nor were this weekend's three wide releases. "Planes: Fire & Rescue," "Sex Tape," and "Purge: Anarchy" offered a little something to everyone: families, couples, and action/horror lovers. Audiences, however, are not biting.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" will come in first again this weekend. Even with a 53% drop (which is surprising for a very good film earning rave reviews and coasting on the goodwill of its predecessor), the sequel should gross somewhere around $34 million by Monday. This will put the two week take at $137 million.

The only real success story this weekend, though, is the micro-budgeted genre film "The Purge: Anarchy," which came in second. By Monday the sequel will have earned somewhere around $28 million. While not close to the $34 million its predecessor opened to last year, that's still a solid haul, especially during a year when micro-budgeted horror films have been flopping one after another.

"The Purge: Anarchy" is not only a fairly satisfying action picture, it is an absolutely brutal condemnation of Obama's and the Left's vision for America.

I didn’t even know about Purge until now. Maybe the press has been ordered to do a blackout on it. On another note I did see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and it was a pretty good movie.

I didn’t go to the movie theaters to see the first digital version, Rise of the Planet of the Apes” because I thought a movie with digital created characters wouldn’t be very good but one night it was on one of the channels while I was doing some chores around the house and started watching it and got sucked right in. It was actually very good and the realism was absolutely amazing (I hate the misuse of that word by youths btw).

Have you seen the Lord of the Rings movies? Or The Hobbit movies?

After not going to the movies for a long while I went to see “America” a couple of weeks ago and already bought my ticket for tomorrow’s “Monty Python Live.”

Still don’t see much to get me back to the theaters like I used to. The Purge does look interesting.

Yes. Liked the first 3. This last bunch is almost too much for a mere mortal to take in. Almost too much action all the time and way too much CG for me.

Something happened to Cameron Diaz after "Something about Mary" and she just looked like she'd been through hell and back and had scars to prove it.

She never seemed attractive to me after that stage, I don't know what happened to her. She was at her peak in "The Mask".

"Sex Tape" with Cameron Diaz? No thanks.

Rent the first Purge movie. The ending is the biggest indictment of class warfare I have ever seen in major motion picture.

“The Purge: Anarchy”....sounds like a much better dystopian take than Hunger games which I refuse to see, with a female hero (heroine). That is feminiznazi BS, the lite version for 0Bama era America. Only wimps go looking for female action heroes.... with some rare exceptions like Joan of Arc or a Golda Meir.

Women and men are supposed to look up to male heroes. I also never (rarely) vote for female judges unless I know for sure she is conservative or has some common sense, they rarely do

There were some people saying that about the first one, but it wasn’t. The only way one could think that was if they watched the trailers and didn’t see the movie.

And/or they can’t afford such luxuries as going out to the movies anymore.

As long as Hollywood has “the agenda” I will not buy a ticket. There are millions who agree.

It will be interesting to see how Persecuted does on its opening weekend. Gretchen Carlson (FNC) had a small role in it and was interviewing Fred Thompson (plays a priest) yesterday, but I was working and didn’t get to listen. I heard it has religious/Christian and 1st amendment rights overtones (e.g., not a lib film). I did hear Gretchen say than some of the “critics” reviews hadn’t been great, but IMHO most of them are libs, so probably wouldn’t give this a good review anyway (sex - good; religion - bad).

I normally don’t go to movies but want to see America and this one could be interesting.

Here’s what it’s about:
An evangelist finds himself framed for murder and on the run after he refuses to back a senator’s proposition calling for sweeping religious reform.

She’s not pretty at all. I attended a party in L.A. in March and she was in the other room. The only thing peeps were in agreement with was that her handlers should not have let her show up. Age caught up to her and it was so bad, guys were hitting on the hotter waiter girls.

I watch all the new movies online. If they are no good I just shut em down and haven’t lost a dime. I have a laptop hooked up to my big tv and it makes me happy. Haven’t been in a movie theatre is so many years I don’t remember the last time.

Cameron Diaz is over forty and looks it despite best efforts. Hollywood isn’t kind. She may have to become a TV character if she wants to keep working. Her movie star days seem likely over.

I really like the first “The Purge”, but just really didn’t think the second one looked that great. I would not see Planet of the Apes...boring. Sex Tape looks funny but I just don’t have time to see it this weekend. The Summer box office is down but not particularly out. They had a few surprised hits.....The Fault in the Stars was supposed to make around 30 million total and now it is at 120 million. 22 Jump Street was not supposed to make the incredible amount it has. I saw both films and they each deserve every cent they have made.
