Utah teacher charged with inappropriately touching students

Four fifth-grade girls in Salt Lake City have accused their teacher of touching them inappropriately.

James Rolland Carter, 62, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with two second-degree felony counts of sexual abuse of a child and two class A misdemeanor counts of lewdness involving a child.

Carter’s school is not identified in the charges, but the address of the allegations matches Lincoln Elementary School.

The Salt Lake City School District would not confirm any details of a case involving Carter, but spokesman Michael Williams said that an elementary teacher who was employed for 13 years "is under investigation for alleged improper conduct." Williams would not identify the teacher by name.

The guy is 62 years old and probably has been doing the same thing for 35 - 40 years. Probably in the teachers union and has been in the “pass the trash” program for most of those years.

I think tarring & feathering is a venerable tradition that needs to be revived.

CAROLINE R.
My 10 year old daughter just went camping with him. We have been family friends forever. He is the kindest, most innocent, hardworking man I know. My daughter, who is 10, felt very comfortable with him. I know groups of girls who have banded together to try to ‘get rid of’ a tough teacher. I am devistated for Jim. He is a truly good man and I still will trust my daughter with him forever.

I don’t think Mr. Carter would do such a thing. He was my fifth grade teacher and I still remember that he was a good educator. I know that he would never do such things. Let’s see what the court and evidence says if he’s guilty of charge or not. MAYBE some groups of girls did try to get rid of the toughest teacher in that grade, which in this case was Mr.Carter… Let’s hope that’s the situation.

McKyla Munoz, who is going into sixth grade, took two of Carter’s classes last school year. She has heard other kids talking about the allegations.

“I’ve just been hearing people say that he touched them or something,” McKyla said.

But she has never witnessed any inappropriateness and she doubts her favorite science teacher would have hurt her peers.

“My opinion is Mr. Carter was funny, supportive and he’d just try to support you to get good grades. He’s a teacher. That’s what teachers do,” McKyla said. “He didn’t even hug. He’d just give you a high-five, and say, ‘Good job, kid.’”

Nakamura said Carter was not arrested most likely because of plea negotiations that have taken place.

The investigation began when a student told her parent about the alleged abuse and the parent contacted police. Other students then came forward.

Salt Lake City School District spokesman Michael Williams confirmed a teacher was put on administrative leave in April for alleged improper conduct. Williams did not confirm Carter’s identity or any details of the case.

I have read all the stories and yes he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The fact he was charged however means enough people came forward to give the DA reason to believe they could move prosecute this and maybe win.

Moral of this story is... always homeschool and always show up for jury duty.

My kids had a teacher in sixth grade who was wonderful. They both loved him. He did touch and hug and I worried for him but that was twenty years ago so not the focus. I’m a hugger. But I try to respect people who don’t want to be touched. I get that. I was a proud member of Al-Anon for eight years and some of those folks had had so much pain and abuse that touching was a bad thing. But most people need hugging.

Not really. It's a he said, 4 she says. He has to be on admin leave until the case is resolved one way or the other to err on the side of the minors. I first thought on this story is these little girls were disciplined by him or wouldn't give them a passing grade so they're retaliating.

FR loves to jump the gun on these stories, but please, don't. I knew a teacher who was charged with sexual misconduct and the DA and LEO made his life a living hell with major leaks to the press and constantly delaying court dates to drag it out for punishment prior to any conviction. They took it one delay too many causing him to commit suicide. Shortly after, the girl admitted she had lied. Of course, the DA and LEO didn't go after her for lying and causing his death because they were guilty of it just as much or more because they were adults and shouldn't have played games. The vast majority of his students didn't believe he'd done anything and knew she was telling more of her weird freaky tales from the beginning.

I’m well aware that there are always kids out there who will pull something like this. Is why I said they are innocent till proven guilty.

I’m shocked however about the number of these cases popping up all over the country. Dude this never happened when I was in school. I never even heard of kids wanting to sleep with a teacher. This is so sick it’s unreal.

This disturbs me to no end.

Suit yourself, I would want to tie a chain to his leg, and leave him the option of either chopping his own leg off or dying when the building he was in burns down, kind of like what Mel Gibson did at the end of The First Mad Max movie.

We had male and female teachers and a priest. Those were the known and out in the open ones but that was in the days where if the kids weren’t complaining (and these weren’t) then nothing was done to stop it. Not condoning it by any means but that was how it was.

OTOH, kids these days know all they have to do is call the cops or CPS claiming someone looked at them in an unfortable way and they’ve ruined that person’s life forever. It’s easy revenge for a bad grade or they didn’t get the lead in theater arts or didn’t get to play first string or any other supposed slight.

You raise a good point except for one thing. Back in my day a kid would call CPS and claim a person, say a parent or teacher was physically abusing him/her. By this I don’t mean sexually I mean hitting. In Junior High we actually had a teacher who would slam kids against the wall. One parent even came to the school and tried to raise hell but nothing I know of was ever done to that teacher. Unions I guess.

Point is no kid ever said “sexual abuse” so that begs a question who put that in their heads? Maybe the schools shouldn’t be teaching them so much about sex so early? (well actually the schools should not teach them about sex at all but...) Now it’s backfired and now the kids use it to their advantage in some cases.

When I was in high school a few years ago, we had a teacher who stabbed a man in her apartment. I’m not sure what happened with the guy she stabbed or the court case (all I know she was convicted), but she was quietly employed by another school in the same school system within 6 months.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
