BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant says he's "scared" about his future after basketball, although he's embracing the challenge of finding something that he can be as passionate about as sports.
Bryant turns 36 next month and is under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for two more years. He was limited to just six games last season because of two major leg injuries, leaving him with the kind of idle time he never had before in his career.
Bryant gives a peek into his life in a Showtime documentary airing in November. "Kobe Bryant's Muse" covers much of last season, when Bryant was sidelined and the Lakers finished 27-55, the most losses in club history.
"It's a fascinating time to be around this guy," said Gotham Chopra, who directed the film. "There's this sort of looking forward to life after basketball. This is a guy that's asking a lot of questions."
The unexpected time off last season forced Bryant to think about his post-basketball future.

I hope he is saving his money now, while he has the income. It is best for athletes to just save the money and live off interest the rest of their lives. When they start investing, starting businesses, they don’t do very well and lose it, with no way to make it back again.
Sounds like Kobe is saying Basketball provided stability and structure. He’s right. The average really good athlete does not have the skills or the discipline to make that much money with becoming ruined by the available lifestyle. Maybe he should try coaching. At least he survived fame and success without becoming another Dennis Rodman.
Coach Krzyzewski had some great stories about Kobe’s work ethic; I heard him tell them more than once. Kobe’s life is around basketball - the change is going to hurt.
One big basketball star once told me that after her competitive life was over she felt empty. All her life people had been cheering for her and she continually won. Then, suddenly, nothing. Life in the stands instead of on the court.
Yes, it will be a struggle having no job and only a quarter of a billion dollars in his bank account. Whatever will he do?

Growing up is tough on everyone.
It’s tougher when you are middle aged.
If he has saved his money, his life at 37 will be a lot less scary than most people’s.
Same fear expressed by many celebrities everywhere,....after they stop complaining about their loss of privacy and the intense public demand to know them....(those nasty paparazzi)
The NBA doesn’t test for HGH, neither does the NFL. Their unions won’t allow it, it must be fantastic stuff. If they do finally put one in, look for the baseline level to be taken from the actual population that is going to be tested for HGH and pretty easy to beat. I wonder how many superstar’s careers have been extended because of it, especially coming back from injury.

Guys like him have tons of money...much more than the average person can imagine. Yet they complain that they are stressed by having to move on in their lives. Stop whining. Give me a break. What a baby. Grow up. Who cares? What difference does it make?
No longer will they be able to intimidate subordinates, or throw their weight around.
Me? I'm looking forward to a career change in a couple of years. Some would call it retirement, I see it as taking on new challenges. I've got several projects in mind, but they need to be fleshed out.
He just needs to find another outlet that isn’t so skill based. Do some triathlons, do something crazy like RAAM.
Or join the army.
