A new report offers good and bad news about the AIDS epidemic in the United States: The annual diagnosis rate of HIV, the virus that causes the disease, has dropped by one-third in the general population but has climbed among young gay and bisexual males.
Significantly fewer heterosexuals, drug users and women were diagnosed each year with HIV, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, the annual diagnosis rate more than doubled for young gay and bisexual males.
The push for safer sex may be falling on deaf ears in a generation too young to have seen the ravages of AIDS, said report co-author Amy Lansky, deputy director for surveillance, epidemiology and laboratory sciences at the CDC's Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.
"It's been more than 30 years since the first cases were reported," she said. "It's harder to maintain that sense of urgency."
The report only looked at people diagnosed with HIV, and health officials think many more are infected with the virus but don't know it. The statistics also don't say anything about when these people were infected, making it hard to pinpoint trends in efforts to prevent transmission of the virus.

As time goes by, the percentage of older gay men who have HIV increases. This means that, if a young gay has anal sex with an older gay, the probability of being infected has also increased.

He’s also an amazing athlete who kept in shape and was apparently not overly active in the gay lifestyle.
AIDS is a bit like malaria. It’s a chronic condition that will eventually “get you,” but your lifestyle can push the end off a long way.
I knew the bucket was huge, but had no idea until I did a little research for this thread.
Money for breast cancer is way out of whack, too, compared to prostate cancer.

With roughly 160 million men in the U.S., and 27 million of them under 15, 2% would leave us with about 2.6 million gay men. With an infection rate of 500,000 per year that would mean virtually all young gay men are being infected, since the older ones already have been.
Keep in mind that anal sex and injected drugs is pretty much the only way (statically) for a man to get infected with HIV.
THere is no way near an infection rate of 500,000 per year; there’s about 50,000.
There are about 2 million gay men, of whom about 800,000 to 1 million are infected. An additional 500,000 have died.

Don’t flip out over that needle prick, doctors and nurses: Only 0.4% of those acquiring HIV infections from means other than drug use of sex get AIDS from the HIV infection. (in 2010, that’s 31 out of 7,600.)
The movie philomena (blech) was about a woman in the olden days who couldn’t keep her knees together. Had a kid, the orphanage sold the baby. He grew up homo, died of aids.

I got the 500K number from the article... However it doesn’t matter. Even at 50K per year all the people who engage in anal sex are at an extreme risk. The disease is a blood disease and is spread through anal sex and dirty needles. Women who get it from their bi partner are also overwhelming getting it through anal sex.
Could this mean that IV narcotic use is declining?
I also believe that part of I may be that Magic Johnson takes his medications consistently, and doesn’t have coexisting illnesses.
