McDonald’s, KFC face new food scandal after workers serve food off floor
NYPost ^ | July 21, 2014 | Reuters

McDonald’s Corp. and Yum Brands Inc. are facing a new food safety scare in China, denting the fast food giants’ efforts to shore up reputations and businesses that were hurt by a 2012 safety scandal in one of their biggest markets.

McDonald’s and KFC-parent Yum apologized to customers on Monday after Chinese regulators shut a local meat supplier following a TV report that showed workers picking up meat from a factory floor, as well as mixing meat beyond its expiration date with fresh meat. The firms said they’ll stop using the supplier.

The report, which focused on McDonald’s and Yum, brings the pair back into the firing line following the 2012 scandal that involved chicken pumped with excessive amounts of antibiotics. It’s unclear whether the meat supplier, a local unit of US-based food provider OSI Group LLC, may have sold goods to other clients too.

I think we're seeing why they wanted the regulations changed so they could ship US chickens to China for processing.

My attitude on these places is if you eat there, you deserve what you get.

The supplier involved probably processes chicken for a lot of restaurants and food products. Heck go to the grocery store and you might get the stuff off the floor.

In all seriousness, the mixing of expired meat with fresh meat bothers me a lot more than workers picking meat off the floor.

At what point in having food processed in China was this unexpected?

A curse on the business and govt people who have made this happen.

I think in China its the 5 week rule.

No, that's only with cat meat, since it has nine lives.

Dog and other meat is dependent upon the amount of siracha sauce it has had on it, but usually 6-10 days.

(According to Wackipedia Chinese Edition, as translated from the Mandarin)

“If it’s on the floor less than five seconds you can brush it off and eat it”.

It’s used in many households in the U.S., particularly ones with small children.

I was in the Philippines a year ago for our production company and we were invited by an American businessman who supplied the McNuggets to McDonald’s in the Philippines. They literally electrocute the chickens and process the meat directly. They had sweepers who swept every debris and chicken crap that dropped on the floor. I guess the cameras in the place scared them LOL

As of 2010 there were over 1,125 McDonalds and 3,400 KFC’s locations in China.

I would not doubt it. I remember they passed a law that said chickens could be sent to China for processing and still be labeled as “Product of the USA”

I’ll guarantee you it’s not just at fast food operations. Many establishments, high end and low end turn a blind eye to these slips off of the spatula or the plate, or that sneeze by the preparer that wasn’t caught. In places like NYC, Boston, Chicago and other big cities where payoffs to the health inspectors is the norm it is even more prevalent.

In my house, we have to fight the dogs for any meat scraps that hit the ground. Most are intercepted by the dogs about 6” below counter height. I’m having trouble understanding the “5 second rule’...I’ve never seen food that was still on the floor after 5 seconds!

Smithfield comes to mind....and all the subsidiary companies the chingchangs got when they bought Smithfield. If the chingchangs will serve that kind of outrageous swill to their own people, how outrageous will the rot be that they send HERE? And has anyone else noticed how the beautiful, wholesome-looking Smithfield TV commercials have INCREASED since the chingchangs took over?

I’ve been to weddings in fancy Brooklyn wedding halls, staffed by Hispanic catering staff, where I saw staff pick up chicken that had fallen from a platter to the floor and PUT IT BACK ON THE PLATE. Yuck. Must have taken that move from a Chinese manual on catering procedures.

Guy walks into a restaurant, orders a steak.
Waiter brings it out with his thumb on it, sets it down in front of him.
Guy sez, “How come you got your thumb on my steak???”
Waiter sez, “So it don’t fall on the floor again.”

But seriously folks...

If they use the 5-sec rule what's the problem? Frying expired chicken is ok
if it's not rotting, smelly, or brown. Picky Picky.
