Posted on 07/23/2014 5:46:02 AM PDT by george76
MINNEAPOLIS A Twin Cities man is upset about the way his family was treated on a Southwest Airlines flight because of a tweet.
Duff Watson says he was asked to de-board a flight from Denver to Minneapolis with his two kids on Sunday after an agent didnt like a tweet he wrote about her service.
Watson and the agent had a disagreement before boarding initially.
Hes an A-List passenger, which means he gets priority boarding. But a gate agent wouldnt let his 6-year-old and 9-year-old board with him so theyd all have to wait to board later.
In leaving I said, you know, Real nice way to treat an A-list. Ill be sure to tweet about it, he said.
And thats just what Watson did.
Soon after getting to their seats, the family of three was asked to leave the plane.
[She said] her safety feels threatened at this point because of what I tweeted, Watson said.
Watsons daughter, Lucy, said she feared for her father.
Watson says at that point, his children started to cry. He doesnt understand why his family was targeted.
There was no use of profanity, there were no threats made. There was nothing other than, you know, a terse exchange between a customer service agent and a customer, he said.
Watson says he was forced to delete the tweet.

Looks like somebody better start looking for a new job. I’d can that agent immediately.
There is probably more to this. My guess is the guy was being an asshole.
There could be another side to this story.
Maybe someone had a “special” reason to separate the kids from their dad.
There are always too sides to these stories and I could believe either side in this story:
On the one hand, these flight attendants can be power-drunk Nazis at times and take any little slight or show of temper as a terrorist act.
On the other hand, some passengers can be real a-holes.
Who forced him to delete his tweet? And how did they do it?
The whole incident revolves around the exact words he used in the tweet and he can’t remember them? Sounds a bit suspicious.
“That does it! I’m going to tweet about this!” Some relative of Pajama Boy?
“My guess is the guy was being an asshole.”....
I would side with you on this. I used to travel via air a lot and have witnessed a number of people over the years that played the “Do you who I am” card expecting to get their way. there are a lot of a-holes out there, just ask any airline gate agent.
On a flight out of BAL three weeks ago I complained about Delta service in a tweet and they DM’d me immediately and asked how they could help...
The pilot is likely the one that booted the twit. If you annoy the pilot, you don’t fly on his flight, period.
The airlines are a tight knit group of employees, more so than any other industry.
I’ve seen stuff like this first hand before. Guy was complaining about the crappy service that the gate agent for Delta was providing.
Agent said she felt threatened and called security.
The airline gate agents can be real winners.
And why announce you’re going to do it. Do it, take the flight, and then inform them as you’re getting off in MSP that you told the whole world how you were treated.
There could be but air travel is much worse today then it was even 4 or 5 years ago. They are flying at capacity so any hiccup in the system causes tremendous ripple effects. The planes and airports are dirtier, more crowded and more expensive. The airlines pretty much don’t give a crap about customer service and treat you like cattle.
If you complain they’ll boot you off the plane or have you arrested in a heartbeat.
If this is all he said he was simply communicating his displeasure. It’s pretty common for airlines to let groups board with the earlier zone, especially if some are children.
I don’t fly southwest very often because of their boarding system.
Have you worked with women much? My guess is she used the intimidation card to settle her personal beef. We both have a guess. Right?
Baltimore? That’s were Southwest is flying the illegals. Someone here was flying from Phoenix to Baltimore and there were a dozen coughing teenagers being flown there. Apparently they were gang members (Baltimore doesn’t have enough already?) because none of them had shoe laces and they were accompanied by LEOs.
They got priority boarding. Our tax dollars at work.
“The airline gate agents can be real winners.”
I couldn’t imagine a worse job to have. They have to deal with people bitching and moaning the whole day; day after day.
Last time I checked, assholes could still fly in passenger aircraft, and it’t a good thing, too, or I’d be in real trouble.
A 6 and a 9 year do not need special assistance to board a plane. His kids apparently did not have A tickets so he was trying (seemingly) to get his kids to board early.
Southwest boards the kids and families with special needs after the A group before the B group.
I worked in technical support for a telecom company so I know exactly how they feel.
Some of them do it with a smile, and some prefer torture.
“A 6 and a 9 year do not need special assistance to board a plane”
No, but they need to board with their family.
I dont fly southwest very often because of their boarding system.
Funny. I fly SW frequently and have no problem with their boarding system at all.
Just make sure you are near a computer 24 hours before your flight and you’re typically golden.
Flying coach 5 years ago was much better than First Class is now. The cabins are dirty, the flight attendants can be downright surly. They'll have you thrown off the plane in a heartbeat. I've seen it.
As a retired really Frequent Flyer the whole point in gaining Top FF Status is to get privileged and sometimes Gate Agent Personnel need to hear “Do you know who I am” when it becomes necessary. They don’t like it? So be it.
This guy is obviously a Frequent Flyer on SW. I don’t tweet, but I would sure drop a note to SW Prez. Betcha the South West CS Agent at minimum got a reminder on the corporate purpose of FF program.
When did airline staff get so damned surly?
When I was at Disney World, I saw this emasculated dad trying to deal with his young daughter finally yell “if you don’t start behaving, I’m going to tell Tinker Bell!” This pathetic guy reminds me of this dad.
No, but they need to board with their family.
Exactly. So dad needed to wait until his kids could board, not try to push them in front of others.
It is what used to be called common courtesy.
I agree...there are nice ways to convince people to give you what you want but being a bully and a Jerk isn’t the way to do it.
that being said, I can also understand wanting to make sure you are sitting with your kids, as a parent I wouldn’t want to chance a drunken pervert sitting next to my child a half a plane away...But if this is a priority for you fork over more cash to another airline where you have better odds of sitting with your children in flight
why is SWA paying someone to monitor tweets ?
how did they find or see his tweet?
is SWA monitoring the wifi?
Most airlines allow top tier passengers to board early - even with two family members. Not sure about SW, I’ve never flown them.

I don’t understand the cranky traveler who takes his/her crankiness out on the flight attendants, gate keepers and ticket agents. Grow up, folks. We might note that no traveler has ever been thrown off a plane for being, if not pleasant, at least polite. And we all know how hard it is after delays, multiple airports, 24 hours straight travel time, but it is doable.
I’d rather sit next to a screaming baby than a cranky, rude adult.
Anyhoo... I get to the airport for the flight home, to find out that *almost* all of the flights out are cancelled due to weather. I'm standing in line at the counter, and the two customers in front of me really read the ticket agent the riot act. They both chew out the poor lady in good shape. One person didn't get out of the airport at all that day, and the other got routed to Florida via Dallas (or Denver?) if memory serves.
So, my turn comes up. I stick my temper in my pocket, put on my megawatt smile, and say (approximately)....."So.....it looks like the weather is making a mess of things. Is there anything that you're able to do to help me out, here?" ......"Yes, sir. Let's see what we can do, here."
I got out on one of the few remaining flights, made good connections, and reached my destination - a couple of hours later than scheduled, but not awful.
You get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. I'm thinking that there's more to this story than what we're hearing.
“A list” just means you checked in early. Now it usually means you paid $20 each way for priority seating. My guess is he paid one upgrade, and thought he could bring the kids along for free. If they were younger, they would have boarded first anyway.
I fly for business frequently but my schedule doesn’t really allow me to be near a computer 24 hours before so I get a seat.
I have never had any trouble with any of them. I know their jobs are really stressful so I do not need to add more. I treat everyone like I want them to treat me and it works.
“The airlines pretty much dont give a crap about customer service and treat you like cattle.”
Customer Service does not extend to giving benefits to those who are not entitled to them. The guy was in the wrong in making a scene when the airlines refused to allow someone he was traveling with to accompany him during priority boarding. Sure, they were his kids but his kids aren’t entitled to anything just because they are his kids.
I’m curious about why the gate agent felt threatened after the Pac had boarded the aircraft unless the pac continued the confrontation after boarding.
Funny thing. Similar thread on a cruise line board about a guy who wanted to take his kids through priority boarding when they were not entitled. Kids were teenagers and one was 21.
Flying pretty much sucks these days on almost all US airlines. Crowded, dirty, full of surly tired stinky and sick people.
Add in the chance of being jailed for some petty argument regardless of who is at fault.
I hate flying on commercial airlines.
Yeah, after he was on the plane and about to be heading away from her at 600 mph. Maybe a case where everyone involved was an a-hole.
Many hotels now have kiosks in the lobby so you can print your boarding passes the day before.
Unfortunately that only goes so far when faced with arbitrary or downright ignorant flight crew.
In one case I was seated in an exit row next to a black lady. The black flight attendant walks up joking around and asks the black lady next to me if she’ll perform the exit row duties. She does it in a joking fun manner and the lady next to me answers in a joking manner.
Then the flight attendant comes to me and I answer in a similar joking manner. She gets all pissy and says I can answer yes or no or she’ll throw me off the plane.
I use online check in and get my boarding pass on my phone.
I like knowing where I’ll sit.
What about the cranky FA's, gate keepers and ticket agents? Surely you must have seen some of them?
I fly a lot and have seen the level of service/pleasantness deteriorate over the past few years. Maybe it's security, maybe it's the airline mergers but many airline employees are stressed and unhappy.
Getting pleasant service is a thing of the past. I was on a morning flight recently. The flight attendant *forgot* to serve coffee. She sat and read most of the flight. That was in First Class. Another one forgot to make sure the lav was empty before she had the pilot come out to use the lav. That's a major security issue.
Is it against the law to be an a$$hole?
Probably some feminazi asserting herself.
This is one of the reasons I no longer fly unless it is an absolute dire emergency.
Jump in the truck, carrying my own food, listening to Rush. Much better than flying.
