New York is America's most unhappy region, a new study has found - while Richmond tops the table as American's most contented place. I been living in Richmond for 5+ years. I can see why it is "happy". Housing is affordable, good schools in the suburbs, convenient access to everything one needs to maintain a suburban lifestyle, for example, Costco, and easy commuting. I grew up in the NY metro area and spent 10 years in CA and one gets spoiled in the RVA. Also, lots of nice things to do in the area from trips to DC, Williamsburg, Virginia Beach and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Richmond...close enough to the coast to get there often, far enough inland to avoid the worst of the hurricane season.

I haven’t been out to the Richmond area in about 15 years - but given my impressions about the area back then, I do agree with your sentiments.

That area and a 40-50 mile radius has been a great area to live in, raise a family, and retire in.
The two corporations I worked for had reps who spent their careers and retired in that area.
It is one of the few areas where Bay area people, we know have stayed there after relocation.

Just don’t do more than 20 mph over the speed limit. It’s reckless driving in VA, and you can go to jail.
