There are many terrible children's programs through which parents must suffer during their child's young life. For every Sesame Street, there is an annoying Caillou or an acid-trippy Yo Gabba Gabba. But Thomas and Friends is or was the one show with enough subversive messages to make me turn it off for good.
My son, now three-and-a-half years old, thankfully never never went through a manic train fascination like so many other children. But once in a while, he'd get a bug in his brain to watch Thomas, and every time I sat and watched with him, I winced and groaned almost as much as Percy.

I guess it was a 'micro-aggression'?
Lionel hating ass of a parent
Tracey’s gone off the rails on a Crazy Train.
I need to learn how to fix those little engines. He's probably got a dozen that have gone to the great train graveyard.
Funny, he's actually taught me a few things about trains. I always thought the car that carried people would've been called a "passenger car". My then 4-year old son corrected me that it is actually called a "coach".
Anyways, I love that racist Thomas and his racist friends, even if that famous racist and homophobe Alec Baldwin drops in from time to time.
Good lesson for a boy to learn. Could save him a beating at school.
satire or just the full scope of Guardianista leftist insanity.
Meanwhile this sensitive liberal soccer mom no doubt excuses the Muslim murder of Christians as a cultural difference.
Thomas’ highest goal was to be “a Very Useful Engine.”
This essay was written by a man who aspires to be a very useful idiot.
And oddly enough we;
Drive on the Parkway and park in the driveway.
Cargo travels on a ship or airplane while shipments travel by land.
Maybe they could fix the tracks, so to speak, by having Pink Thomas take a fun side-trip to a park bathroom while wearing fairy wings and sucking on a pacifier.
Or maybe a highway rest stop..?
Thomas was one of the shows I enjoyed watching with my kids. What is this bird brain whining about? Has the show gone PC over the years or something?
I think she's whining about the fact that it hasn't.
God help this woman’s son.
You know what one is pretty good “Curious George”. I never really like that Thomas the Tank Engine, there was always something creepy about it.
And the “Cat in the Hat” is OK.
And the song from “Dinosaur Train” is great.
Can you tell I have a wee grandchild now?
There certainly are some strange birds out there.
The creepiest things EVER were the Teletubbies.
Thomas had Pierce Brosnan, Ringo Starr AND George Carlin on the show.
I sat through a lot of these myself as my boy was a huge fan (this was back when the Thomas shows came on VHS). There is, I found, both charm and integrity in this series.
I thought of writing a “How Not To” management book -
“Confusion and Delay: Autobiography of Sir Topham Hatt”
Not too many of the target audience would get the reference though.
I'm talking about the Guardian, not Thomas The Tank Engine.
And don’t forget that there are Interstate Highways in Hawaii.
I think the target audience for Teletubbies were college kids on drugs.
“”Funny, he’s actually taught me a few things about trains””
Same here with my 5 year old grandson. He could tell me the difference between a steam and a diesel engine when he was three. If I make a mistake in describing one of the cars, he’s right there to correct me; “that’s a tender, grandma.” His grandpa keeps a supply of AA and AAA batteries on hand and the grandson knows where to get the right ones for him to change. They do start at a young age and are an absolute delight. Sure made birthdays and Christmas easy - only two days apart - which trains or accessories didn’t he already have???
I figure the person who wrote this is a democrat even if in the UK - may he/she never step foot on our shores.
Don’t really know them. My kid was too old by the time they came along. I saw a bit of the wiggles with my niece and nephew. And Spongebob is OK I guess, although there kinda really is a gay undercurrent to that show. But I think it might be just ironical gay, not true homo gay, if you know what I mean and I’m not sure I do.
It's a bleedin' train! What else is it supposed to do than be "a really useful engine"? Join the Royal Ballet????
... But once James gets back on the rails and picks up Granddaughter Hatt and her friends, all seemingly ends well because the girls love pink.
Well guess what? It's not OK. You think a little boy watching Thomas is going to file away the lesson that pink is OK for boys? No, what kids remember is that James was laughed at, cruelly, over and over again, because he looked different and was clad in a "girly" pink color.
Maybe the train was mortified that it had to go out in public wearing only its underpaints!
A lot of people don't like to be seen driving their car around town with a panel painted in primer gray.
There are boy trains and girl trains? Do go on, continue...
“peep, peep” = peeps to Holder
Interesting criticism from a gal who gets her vanity rant published -- and I'm guessing she is NEVER a lot of fun.
