Pope Francis has met privately with a Sudanese mother in Rome who was put on death row for refusing to renounce her Christian faith and become a Muslim.
The Vatican said Pope Francis had 'a very affectionate' meeting with Meriam Ibrahim, 27, her husband and their two small children.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said the pope 'thanked her for her faith and courage, and she thanked him for his prayer and solidarity' during the half-hour meeting.
He blessed Ms Ibrahim as she held her baby daughter Maya in her arms whom she gave birth to in prison two months ago.

Thanks for sharing. My monitor got a bit blurry. Bless her and her family and keep them safe now that they’re out of that terrorist ****hole (pardon my French). I hope they all live a long, happy and blessed life together.
Truly a miracle that she’s alive. I mean honestly; what chance did she have (much less her baby) 3 months ago? Now she’s safe in Rome apparently. Wow.
Last I heard she was stopped at the border after she was released from prison. I thought she was dead for sure.
They will reside here in the USA. Her husband is American ( so is her son ).
Now she’s what I call a “real woman”
This is truly a miracle! Can you imagine going from the terror of the prison, awaiting torture and death just for not renouncing your Christian faith, to being safely in Italy and meeting the Pope? What a blessing! Prayers do work.
God does work miracles.
And it didn’t even take a hashtag to do it.
This is why we should not. It leaves us with no words to describe someone who really is brave.
Kissing your boy toy on TV after you get NFL contract? Not brave. You risked nothing.
Saying no when told to renounce your God or die? Brave. You risked everything.
Great photo op Pope Francis but why you actionless to the 300 Christian girls kidnapped, beaten and raped in Nigeria. Why the silent when 50,000 Chaldean Christian are threatened and run out of Mosul. Stop being soft on muslim terrorist who kill Christian for no other reason that they are Christians. Stand up for Jesus and he children.
re: They will reside here in the USA. Her husband is American ( so is her son ).
That is good to know. Meanwhile, I hope they have good security in the US. They are going to need it. I wonder if there is a fund set up to help the family.
Freedom!! Any human regardless of religion should drop a tear for this.
And thanks be to God and our Lord Jesus Christ for delivering this BRAVE woman and her family from the "jaws" of those who sought to devour her and destroy her faith!
Here is but one such story - http://www.christianpost.com/news/as-christians-abandon-mosul-pope-francis-prays-for-end-of-persecution-in-mideast-123648/
Wonderful story. It must have been a never ending nightmare for her and her family.
I’m sure Obama and Kerry were instrumental in her getting out of the country. /sarc
Praying for the end of persecution doesn’t help the 200 girls who were raped or the 50,000 Chaldean Christians in Mosul.
Time for the Second Crusade.
I’m so thankful for the safety of this very brave woman and her family. May God continue to bless, protect and be with all of them.
A little unwarranted. This isn’t the 1100s, the Pope doesn’t have soldiers he can send in. In fact, maybe the Vatican should consider training a military contingent.
Part of me screams "yes". Another part says good works like this have to be done with the cooperation of a government. Otherwise I could envision Vatican troops being co-opted to support government's policies, stuff like helping the hordes of children over-running the US.
The Vatican might be best used as a conscience, not a military force.
‘This is truly a miracle! Can you imagine going from the terror of the prison, awaiting torture and death just for not renouncing your Christian faith, to being safely in Italy and meeting the Pope? What a blessing! Prayers do work.’
Thanks for putting this into words. Agree w all who said these pics, & the miracle they represent, evoke a tear. Maybe more than one.
‘Praying for the end of persecution doesnt help the 200 girls who were raped or the 50,000 Chaldean Christians in Mosul.’
‘Im sure Obama and Kerry were instrumental in her getting out of the country. /sarc’
Maybe an Italian diplomat can work at getting our Marine out of Mexico.
Just a thought.
‘And thanks be to God and our Lord Jesus Christ for delivering this BRAVE woman and her family from the “jaws” of those who sought to devour her and destroy her faith!’
‘Saying no when told to renounce your God or die? Brave. You risked everything.’
Photo of the Year. Finally, this precious woman & her family are free. Thank God.
It calls her in the article Dr. Is she a medical doctor? Also does anyone know what the story is behind her husband being wheelchair bound.
Just wondering. All in all, a nice story about a truly brave woman and her equally brave husband I imagine.
RE: It calls her in the article Dr. Is she a medical doctor?
Yes she is. Most sources say that she owns a small farm and a shop (an entrepreneur), in addition to being a doctor.
Al Samani Al Hadi is the half brother who caused all of her misery. Al Hadi, the offspring of Meriams absent Muslim father after he abandoned Meriam and her Ethiopian Orthodox mother, is the one who reported Meriam and her South Sudanese Christian husband, Daniel Wani, to the authorities, accusing her of adultery for a marriage not recognized under Sharia.
Al Hadi and his Islamic family, rather than waiting to embrace sister Meriam, are hoping that she will not give in and renounce her Christian faith. They were counting on her execution so that they could grab all her assets, business, and even her children, 20 month-old Martin and newborn Maya. Some media sources have also reported that Al Hadi and other family members have declared their intentions to kill Meriam herself if she is released from prison.
