California couple may be charged $500 for not watering lawn, or $500 for watering it

Ahh, government:

In this week’s “Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don’t” file: A Southern California couple received a letter from Glendora city officials threatening to fine them $500 if they don’t get their sun-scorched brown lawn green again, reports AP. Which Laura Whitney and Michael Korte would gladly do, except for one thing: They could also be fined $500 if they water their lawn too much; they’re currently only watering twice a week. With more than 80% of California in an extreme drought, according to the Los Angeles Times, the state water board voted this week to implement emergency conservation plans and gave the OK to fine water wasters up to $500 a day. As the board’s chairwoman noted, “A brown lawn should be a badge of honor because it shows you care about your community.”

Synthetic lawns will become more and more commonplace. Folks in the north can’t understand, but to not have to irrigate and take care of a lawn is a wonderful thing.

Fined if you do, fined if you don’t - it’s positively brilliant! Why didn’t they come up with this sooner?

I looked at the city website. The restrictions are pretty mild. They should be able to keep their grass green. I suspect these people are envirowackos who take pride in a brown lawn. We had them here too during our last drought.

More than likely a crackpot Lib in the neighborhood peeking through curtains with phone in hand, and nothing else to do, but make trouble for the neighbors.

Have seen it happen before.

This may be the last year I have a lawn in San Jose. They are very expensive to maintain, even when the rainfall is normal. Much of California is naturally arid.

I doubt it - plastic grass has been around since the '60s at least, and there have been multiple California droughts during that time. Every time, people mention rock gardens, cactus or synthetic lawns, but every lawn out there still seems to be real grass, including mine.

Southern California is a desert. Lawns don't belong there anyway.

Whoever decided grass should be the landscaping plant of choice should be shot in the face. It is a useless plant that requires ridiculous amounts of resources and turns to crap when its needs aren’t met. Its essentially the Democrat of the plant world, sucking up everything, producing nothing, and spreading everywhere.

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against... We’re after power and we mean it... There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

- Ayn Rand, 1957 -
