All of the barbarian tribes that rushed the borders looking for “amnesty” were allowed in, and then the Romans mined the ranks for soldiers.
They eventually learned enough to turn on the Romans and bring down the Empire.
Actually I don’t have a problem with this IF standards are not relaxed to allow the dreamers into the service. You have to have the same grades, the same arrest/drug/gang records and no felonies in your home country.
I’m afraid that they are classifying “dreamers” people that have not been in this country long, and have no love for this country but only for what this country can do for them (at best; some may want to do harm). Any documentation used for that status can easily be forged.

Some gang members may also enlist to receive weapons, combat, and convoy support training; to obtain access to weapons and explosives; or as an alternative to incarceration. Upon discharge, they may employ their military training against law enforcement officials and rival gang members. Such military training could ultimately result in more organized, sophisticated, and deadly gangs, as well as an increase in deadly assaults on law enforcement officers.
•In May 2005 an Army recruit and suspected Crip member was assigned to the US Army Finance Battalion where he engaged in drug distribution. He was eventually discharged from the Army for misconduct.
•According to open source reporting and multiple law enforcement reporting, soldiers—including gang members—are currently being taught urban warfare for combat in Iraq, including how to encounter hostile gunfire.
•The Defense Criminal Investigative Service reported in 2006 that gang members, particularly MS-13 members, are increasing their presence on or near US military installations.

Creating a “slave class” of soldier. Yeah, that’ll work out just fine when they find out how much the cartels will pay for their services. It’s time to get real and bring back the draft to create, at the minimum, a reserve force capable of defending the homeland.
That was then; the military has to be a lot choosier today and grants fewer waivers.
BTW: a guy truly enlisting to escape gang life would be a good thing, no?
