Skip to comments.Son 'did what had to be done,' kills man attacking mother in their N. Minn. home

A Twin Cities man, already bloodied from one home invasion in far northern Minnesota, repeated the crime down the highway minutes later and attacked a 72-year-old woman before the victims son stepped in saying he did what had to be done and fatally shot the suspect, authorities said Monday.
The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. Saturday outside the house along Hwy. 53, roughly 4 miles east of Ray, Minn., according to the Koochiching County Sheriffs Office.
Im the son who did what had to be done, said Brad Himes, 48, who came to the rescue of his mother, Ethel, and shot Benjamin Beaudoin, 34, of Mendota Heights with a handgun.
Brad Himes said the family had never before seen Beaudoin, whose was in that part of the state to attending a wedding.
The son said his mother came through the incident fine physically, and were doing the best we can to get by. Bad things happen. We just want to get over it.
County Attorney Jeff Naglosky said his office has been briefed about the shooting and declined to say anything more as he awaits investigatory reports from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the St. Louis County medical examiners office.

The son REALLY needs to shut his mouth. He's already said too much to the authorities and it may come back to bite him.
If I came in and found someone assaulting my elderly Mom, they would die too.
But I know that you are smart enough to say nothing to the authorities that would be repeated in the press.
“They?” Both the intruder and your elderly mom? It would be better if just the intruder paid the ultimate price for his actions. The mindset of someone who would kill both is that of a Moslem.
Unfortunately for everyone involved the facts show otherwise.
Ray, MN where the Hoot Owls mate with the Chickens, Roosters or Hens makes no difference —— after all it’s Minnasnowta!
“They” can also be singular when used in such context, but you knew that.
Yep, defense of another would work here, all things else being equal, because even an unarmed man could easily kill an elderly woman, and that’s the threshold for responding with lethal force. Proportional response.
Remember, this is Minnesota.
Backing up a bit...my Mom wouldn’t be the one answering the door.
And soon here comes the local media crying he should have called 911 .... and the son knows that the invader was unarmed and mentally ill. What, he should have the guy fill out a questionnaire before he attacks?????
I fully expect something similar...
They’re never “that kind of guy” until they are “that kind of guy”.
MN people always seem to favor the “downtrodden”, but that does not include victims of crime.
I hope the intruder suffered horribly and knew he was dying.
Would meet a bloody end swiftly...
In all fairness, it sounds like the invader was clearly insane, and I imagine the medical examiner is going to find some very interesting brain damage, maybe even a tumor, when he cracks open his skull.
And yes, it probably goes back to the “traumatic brain injury” he had as a teen. Severe migraines after a TBI are a major red flag, especially associated with an indeterminate “mental illness” and severe paranoia.
Bottom line: the people who defended themselves are blameless, the home invader likely had no control over his actions either.
And I would blame his family for letting him out on his own.
Big ol’ boy...
There should be a “mess with my Mom law” that excuses deadly force.
Don’t be an idiot.
Nice target on his sternum
It is incorrect. It is a construct of the latter-day PC crowd who do not want to “offend” us women by requiring one sex or other when speaking singularly. It does not offend me to assume “he” instead of “they”.
Nice shootin’, Tex.
Not in actual English. Only in Leftspeak. The adoption of Leftspeak by conservatives affects their thinking. Words and grammar are the tools by which the brain thinks about things. Turn over the design of words and grammar to the Borg and you gradually lose your ability to think outside their box. You accept their definitions and conventions when you use their shorthand.
When MSM collectively switched the politically symbolic colors, red and blue, conservatives accepted it with hardly a whimper. Now the color designations have lost their meaning altogether. The left's proud use of Red to designate the totalitarian left once told people a lot about certain groups without having to parse speech and listen to all of it to see if it added up. Bit by bit I see the conservatives on FR adopt the patterns prescribed by the Left. The omnisexual "they" is a feminist construction to keep it in our minds that there is NO difference between males and females. I suspect if you reverted to the proper use of pronouns you would feel very uncomfortable not using at least "he/she-him/her" or maybe it should be "she/he"- you don't want the ladies to think you are dissing them.
Not using language correctly is an indication of sloppy thinking. Using the new forms prescribed by the left is an indication that another front has fallen to the collectivists and they define the words and grammar and you think with their meanings that are subject to change instantly so that what you think you said was muddled from the beginning and becomes its opposite at the next redefinition.
Good for you on the grammar front.
There aren’t many of us remaining up here.
Good communication is the enemy of lies and deception, of course, and indeed of oppression. The other side (Obama and his minions, leftist politicians and judges, the ‘educators’) knows this and has worked for decades now to put us at a disadvantage.
Clear speech and clear thinking are as dangerous to them as any firearm.
>> Not using language correctly is an indication of sloppy thinking.
Of course, the run-on sentence with which you followed that one doesn’t count against *you*. Does it?
Like I said — don’t be an idiot. The poster in no way used the word “they” as a sop to the collectivist left — and you know it. You just enjoy being an arrogant jackass.
Hey, lookie here! Instead of merely taking y’all’s pedantic word for it, I actually RESEARCHED IT! And it seems you’re on somewhat shaky ground:
My favorite retort: “Singular they”: God said it, I believe it, that settles it. http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/003572.html
Gee, that doesn’t sound all that collectivist leftist to me!
The downtrodden and the mentally challenged . . . look at their current governor and former U.S.Senator.
Now for the callous part. If you must be the shooter, earnestly try and shoot so the shootee can have nothing to say.
My inner Grammar Nazi requires me to point out that “Like I said” should be “As I said.” ;)
Obviously doctors didn’t catch the problem, so his family probably had some warning signs, but that’s about it. His most obvious symptom was severe migraines. About 6% of American men have migraines (about 18% of women). So it’s not enough.
The paranoia is possibly more diagnostic, but as a condition itself, which could be by itself, or associated with schizophrenia. But that still needs a professional diagnosis early on.
This was probably a bolt from the blue, that nobody saw coming, so nobody did anything to stop it.
Someone did something to stop it. You better believe.
“He graduated from Princeton High School, then received an undergraduate degree in psychology from Bemidji State University.”
I’ll bet Deputy Molly Solverson and Officer Gus Grimly will get to the bottom of this...if they don’t shoot each other first.
Someone had earlier remarked to the effect of “Why didn’t his family control him?” My point was that he probably didn’t appear dangerous or even deranged until all of a sudden when he just went off. And some psychiatric cases can be like that. Little or no warning.
This is why the medical examiner will be examining his brain “with a fine toothed comb”. He could find a tumor, or unusual blood vessel growth, signs of schizophrenic degeneration, small strokes, who knows?
Yes, the families were in the right to defend themselves; but at the same time, their attacker may have been so out of it that he can’t be entirely blamed either.
There is a frustrating point with some mental illness where “the lights are on, but nobody is home”; where they seem rational and sane, but you might as well be talking to a wild animal. The humanity is no longer there, either temporarily or permanently.
Indefinite pronouns are the real troublemakers. These are singular and need singular pronouns: anyone, no one, everyone, someone, anybody, nobody, everybody, somebody, anything, everything, nothing, something, one, each, either, and neither.
A word like everyone is treating people as a group, so it is singular. When using either or neither, it is one or the other, so you are looking at one at a time, so those two words are singular.
Above are the guidelines I like to observe.
But don't sweat it, Ticks. Someone like you can knock theirselves (or is it thereselve's?) out all he wants by ignoring any stupid old rules they pleases (please's?).
It's (is it its?) the way of the world now, right? Indeed it puts you in some pretty fine company, including the left-wing pedants at the Chronicle of Higher Ed:
I only made one post. It was to the person who made a grammatical error while criticizing someone else’s grammar. And I ended it with a wink.
Well, you can go on and on with your Bravo Sierra. but you know what I meant, I know what I meant, and everyone reading it knew exactly what I said too.
So knock yourself out with your sophistry if you must, I will continue to tell you and anyone else that if someone assaulted my elderly mom, they, meaning that someone, would pay the price.
Amen. But this guy knew what was meant...he’s just impressing himself with his own Bravo Sierra. No need for me to engage that any longer.
Bad beginning, but a good ending.
Wonder what their Senator would have to say about it?
But do it with non leftist English.
Like I said...not worth the argument.
You clearly believe you are the purveyor of all correctness and somehow want to push it on others. I’ll let the readers and lurkers decide which is behaving “leftists.”
