Man Survives 103 Hours Trapped in Freezerů by Licking the Ice

A fish factory worker survived spending more than four days trapped inside an industrial freezer, licking ice to keep himself alive.

Mai Thanh Sang feared he was going to die when he was buried under bags of fish fillets after shelving units collapsed as he and three colleagues cleaned the -22C storeroom.

Thoughts of his wife and baby helped the 23-year-old keep his spirits up while rescue workers spent 103 hours trying to find him.

When they reached him, Mr Sang was suffering from the worst case of frostbite doctors at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, had ever seen.

‘I was crushed by ice. I was trying to scream but it did not make sense. I felt terribly hungry and knew I was getting frostbite,’ he said.

‘At first, I thought I would die but I quickly regained hope. My motivation to stay alive came from thoughts of my wife and my baby. I held on by licking the ice. But I was becoming more and more exhausted.’

Mr Sang’s three co-workers escaped unharmed from the accident at the Van Y Company, while he resorted to ripping open one of the fish bags and drinking the vomit-inducing liquid.

Dr Tran Doan Dao said Mr Sang survived only by the fact he was wearing four coats and a protective hat.

Wow, this really is possibly. I thought this was just a preposterous plot device in sitcoms. Originate on I Love Lucy when she got stuck in a meet freezer, and then perpetuated in many sitcoms through the years.

“three co-workers escaped unharmed” “103 hours to free him”

Whew, that was close! Let’s go home and drink. (?)

LET'S go into my walk-in wine cellar to pick something out.

I don’t think the doctor is buying the “licking ice” explanation.

Not a good search party. Maybe no one even bothered to look, or try to track his activity pattern. Most professional kitchens receive or retrieve or inventory freezer items on the same days of the week, and at the same time of the workday. What? Nobody entered that walk in for almost five days running? I almost have to doubt this story.

But how many cases of frostbite doctors in subtropical Vietnam had ever seen?

So there we were, standing on the dock talking. We noticed this pounding from the sharp freezer. We found poor Max Brown inside shivering. He was the only one there who could not activate the emergency release. He died of drunk driving in his 65 GTO, about five years later.

Sounds like BS to me, -22C for 5 days he would of been frozen solid. I can buy 3 hours, not 103.

I don’t see how it’s possible either. Every time I throw a sirloin filet into my freezer it’s frozen solid after 6 hours.
Why would human flesh behave differently?

Was he wearing 4 layers of clothing?
