Great movie on today, Tuesday, July 29, 2014, 9 AM central time. "The Mortal Storm" with Jimmy Stewart, Margaret Sullivan, and Robert Young. Takes place in pre WWII Europe. An Austrian farmer (Jimmy Stewart) and a professor's daughter (Margaret Sullivan) flee Nazi Germany on skis. Shows what can happen when political correctness takes over a society. Great movie. Set you DVR before you go to work.

“An Austrian farmer (Jimmy Stewart)...”

Is it in English, or do they speak Austrian the entire time? ;)

Imagine how widely the mainstream media maggots would have run with this if Palin had said it instead of Obama. As it is most Americans have never heard of this gaff. Palin’s best known gaff is not a gaff at all because one can see Russian territory from Alaskan territory.

I was thinking “Grapes of Wrath” cause that’s where most of us are heading

Thank you, I will watch it, but @ 6:30 AM is one of the best movies ever made, Dodsworth. In fact, Dennis Miller, put me on to this, as it’s one of his favorite classics.

I think Walter Huston was one of America’s greatest actors. Almost every part was entertaining. I find myself watching Dodsworth over and over again.

Set your DVR, you won’t be sorry. Mine is set for Jimmy Stewart.

Thanks for heads up! I’ve got Dodsworth set to record.

Put me on your ping list, as I think we have the same tastes in movies! :-)

I love Dodsworth. The music is also a star of this movie IMHO. Haunting. Ruth Chatterton is fabulous as is Mary Astor! Huston was one in a million as far as I am concerned. My favorite of his has to be Treasure of the Sierra Madra.
I finally broke down and bought The Mortal Storm on DVD. I bought 2 copies and gave one to my in-laws. This movie is a real gem and too close to home right now.

Can I be added to your ping list please? I usually plan my TV around what is on TCM but I miss some good ones from time to time. I honestly don’t know what I would watch if I didn’t have TCM. Old movies are better than 90% of modern TV/movies

Thank you for the info. I saw part of this movie several years ago, and it frightened me. Never knew the name of it, but I remembered the part about escaping on skis very vividly. Always wanted to see it from the beginning.

Just turned it on - it’s 10 AM Eastern

Actually the “gaffe” was that unnamed female comedian making the joke, and then uneducated idiots going around using it as a Palin quote. I still meet people who swear that Palin said she could see Russia from her “house”.

I agree with you. I’m looking forward to watching Mortal Storm tonight. I’ve watched Dodsworth probably 4 times and each time I pick up something that I missed. While watching this AM before work, I really honed in on Dodsworth trying to get his wife to admit that her fear of age is the real issue. I never noticed before the scene where Kort comes to pick her up, and Sam is about to share with him the advent of their new baby, and she gasps when she thinks he’s going to reveal it.

Very well written and directed.

Watched Blackboard Jungle over the weekend. Another sleeper of a movie.

Yes, Madre is Huston’s best by far. Of course, he won the Academy Award with it.

I recall that scene very well....one thing I love about older movies is that they are so subtle....they allow you to use your imagination which can not be limited. I love a movie that makes suggestions and allows you to use your brain. Movies today spell out every detail and literally leave so little to your imagination. It is insulting to your intelligence ! I watch a lot of British TV shows....they take the time to develop characters and plots and when I watch a show or movie and I think to myself..”I didn’t see that coming”, I love that!!

The end of the Hays code was the beginning of the end of intelligent movies.

Before, the writers had to subtly get their themes across; that forced them to be creative. Now it's just pages and pages of profanity sprinkled with violence, sex, and CGI.

I agree 100%. Artists always rant and rave about any kind of imposed restrictions, yet it’s usually these very structures and discipline that unleashes their creativity.

I also prefer the older films, because unlike modern fare, I actually feel like I’m watching “adults,” not a bunch of overwrought, smart-alecky, stunted teen-agers in adult bodies.

Yes, I feel exactly the same way. I find myself savoring those old movies. I particularly love the Clark Gable ones, like Teacher’s Pet, The Hucksters and Mogambo. Any Number Can Play and Call of the Wild were good too.

And of course the British TV series that you can get thru Netflex. I think I’ve watched every version of Pride & Prejudice that’s out there.

Don’t know if you read much on Kindle or Nook, but some time ago I wrote a play and just had it produced online. No vulgarity, but an intimate story about two people in a marriage.

Dodsworth’s subtlety was pretty much straight in your face. That had to be a movie that was taboo for anyone under 21 back then. I mean, here you have a married woman who doesn’t hide the fact that she wants a fling, and here’s Sam, her husband, totally there, in love with her, letting her blow it out and get it over with, which she does, but by then “He’s out of there!”

By the way, Mary Astor, I agree is great. She plays the old girlfriend in Gable’s Any Number Can Play.
