While some studies have associated unemployment with increased risk of death, others claim that recessions reduce mortality.
Results of the study revealed that losing a job is associated with a 73% higher risk of death, which the team says is the equivalent of adding 10 years to a person's age.
Every percentage-point increase in a person's state unemployment rates was a linked to a 9% reduction in the risk of death - the equivalent of reducing a person's age by 1 year.

I found this on the internet but I don't understand it! At least I can be sure it is Obama adding years to my life, for some reason. He's so good to us.

Wild guess:
Fired - Personal failure with associated stress.
Recession - Not personal. Many others in the same boat.

During WW II found suicide rate decreased - was traced to
sense of comradarie and unity caused by external threats
to community
Also during wartime even marginal persons are needed giving them place in society and support of community

I don't buy the results of the study. Being out of work is horribly stressful. That is, of course for someone with a strong work ethic who wants to work and wants to pay their bills and provide for themself and their family. However, these days there are more and more people who are content to let the government do the providing and paying. So for them it is less stressful being out of work. And then there are the people who have simply given up looking for work. They aren't worrying too much because it seems futile to do so. So, maybe the study results are accurate after all, depending on who participated in the study.
