First Ebola Patient Coming to USA for Treatment

First Ebola Patient Coming to USA for Treatment One of two Americans infected with ebola in West Africa will be brought to the United States for treatment at Emory University. One of two Americans infected with ebola in West Africa will enter the U.S. for treatment at Emory University in Atlanta “in the next several days,” according to an internal memo sent to physicians on Thursday and seen by The Daily Beast. The memo offers few other details about the patient, with no stated time of arrival or departure city, or indicators as to the exact identity of the patient. In absence of specifics, the hospital says it’s “prepared and ready” for the arrival, with a “highly specialized, isolated unit” that it designed with the help of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, headquartered nearby. CNN reported that a specialized medical plane was already en route to Liberia on Thursday night. Staff at the hospital have reportedly been “highly trained” as well and are aware of “unique protocols” that will be necessary to treat the patient. Vince Dollard, associate vice president of communications for Emory, declined to say who the arriving patient is, exactly, but did confirm that it is either Dr. Kent Brantly or Nancy Writebol, two U.S. charity workers infected in Africa. Both remain in serious condition. Writebol received an “experimental serum” Thursday afternoon while Brantly was given a blood transfusion. This is the first time a patient infected with the ebola virus, which can kill up to 90 percent of the people it infects in a matter of days, has been brought to the United States or the Western Hemisphere. The disease is a spread via bodily fluids, necesitating strict isolation for the patients and thorough decontamination. Health care workers like Brantly and Writebol place themselves at great risk to treat diseases like ebola. In a call with reporters Tuesday, Stephan Monroe, deputy director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases at the CDC, assured listeners that the outbreak posed “little risk” to America, adding that the chances of anyone infected arriving undiagnosed were slim. In another call Thursday afternoon, CDC Director Tom Frieden said plans were in place to stop ebola-infected people from boarding planes in West Africa. The hospital says it’s “prepared and ready” for the arrival. After advising against travel to the affected areas, Frieden said increased caution is warranted. “The bottom line is that Ebola is worsening in West Africa,” he said. The CDC plans to send 50 more staff members to Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone in the next month, adding to the dozen CDC workers that are already there. “It will take many months, and it won’t be easy, but ebola can be stopped,” said Frieden. “We know what needs to be done.” The text of the memo sent to Emory physicians follows: This email is sent on behalf Robert Bachman, CEO, EUH; Bill Bornstein, M.D., Ph.D., CQO, CMO, EHC; Ira Horowitz, M.D., CMO, EUH; and Chris Larsen, M.D., D.Phil., Dean, Emory University School of Medicine Dear Physicians, You may hear in the media that Emory University Hospital plans to receive a patient with Ebola virus infection in the next several days. We do not know at this time when the patient will arrive. Please be assured that our hospital is prepared and ready. We have a highly specialized, isolated unit in the hospital that was set up in collaboration with the CDC to treat patients who are exposed to certain serious infectious diseases. This unit is physically separate from other patient areas and has unique equipment and infrastructure that provide an extraordinarily high level of clinical isolation. In fact, Emory University Hospital is one of just four facilities in the entire country with such a specialized unit. Emory University Hospital physicians, nurses and staff are highly trained in the specific and unique protocols and procedures necessary to treat and care for this type of patient. For this specially trained staff, these procedures are practiced on a regular basis throughout the year, so we are fully prepared for this type of situation. We will provide you with any updates as needed. Thank you for your commitment to the privacy and well-being of our patients. Bob, Bill, Ira and Chris

You don’t develop and release a weaponised disease until you have an effective antidote in enough quantities for the . . . uuuhhh . . . “politically Correct” first.

If Ebola infects the US population, I am certain that these libs will be among the first to get it and suffer the most casualties. A lot of them are unhealthy due to:

STDS from their ‘free love’ lifestyles
Bad diets based on bad nutrition
Compromised immune systems (gay/AIDS)

They won’t be able to survive in chaos and chances are that they’ll be among the first to be targeted by the crazies because of their high profile, wealth, and wealthy high profile people are the first to get attacked. Chances are their own family won’t help since some don’t have large families or are on bad relations with them because of their snotty attitudes towards ‘lesser’ folk.

The elites will have hit the eject button long before it gets to that point. They’ll be sipping drinks with umbrellas on a beach somewhere secure with their vial of ‘cure’ or ‘antidote’.

Doubt it; these elites will be the first target of irate mobs.

The Duke of Orleans helped nurture and launch the French Revolution, even voting for the death of his own cousin Louis XVI. Ironically, he was guillotined later on. A lot if people think they are ‘safe,’ but are in fact, not.

IF this breaks out and spreads, Obama won’t be able to escape the staff in the White House, much less flee the country.

At such a tipping point, this means that even being President won’t protect him from public wrath.

For the time being, hubby and I are done with Samaritan’s purse for allowing this.

D.
O.
N.
E.

We have given money and done shoeboxes for their Christmas giveaway.

They’ll just have to get that from someone else.

This is unforgiveable.

You know that’s interesting you would say that. Are you aware that Christians (I’m assuming you are one based on your support of Samaritan’s purse) have been involved very much in the care of the ill and dying, including lepers, bubonic plague and AIDs. The Samaritan turned aside to help a man who had been passed by by others.

Christians don’t DELIBERATELY risk someone ELSES life.

They risk their OWN.

I can’t believe Kent Brantley would knowingly risk an outbreak in CONUS for any reason at all.

Samaritans don’t spread disease knowingly.

Except this bunch apparently.

If it gets away from them I hope they are held legally and financially responsible for any and all damages to anyone harmed by this stunt.

And I grew up in Africa so I know what the state of Africans and their medical care is all about.

Kent was doing God’s work there.

Risking everyone in this country so he can die on his own soil isn’t benefitting anyone. He is/was a big boy and knew the risks. He should be allowed to live with them and die accordingly if it be God’s will.

That’s a low blow and you know fully well BA objects to their foolish decision (putting other people at risk), not care of the ill and dying in general by charities.

I’m sincere in my wish that they be held legally and personally accountable.

Emory medical faculty.

Samaritan’s purse.

Kent’s family if they’ve been involved in this decision.

No kidding.

If this gets away from them the downside for Samaritan’s purse and the work they do will be MASSIVE. There IS no upside. None.

At the very least it looks like a selfish decision by a weak wife compounded by self serving faculty at Emory who have a level 4 facility they’ve been dying to use.

Well...they still have to have people to program the robots and they better know something about the manufacturing of a particular product before they program the robot.

If they got what they wanted they would be in the dark ages again. lol

It’s a goal for them. Pretty sure they’re not totally there. Yet.

But it IS their goal.

They want just enough peasants alive to keep the robots running efficiently. No more.

Like that episode of SG1 where the early industrial age planet mysteriously came down with a deadly flu virus and just as things got really bad an alien species showed up with a vaccine that cured/prevented. Only the vaccine made the recipients sterile. So the alien species colonized the new planet without having to fire a shot.

AMEN!

I’ve objected to money to Africa even as a teenager and I’m tired of American kids being deprived just because our politicos like to show off. This is not right. Let them set up facilities in Africa, but NOT come here.

At first blush, it seems completely senseless to bring the patients here . . . but my guess is that they anticipate more cases here in the U.S. sooner or later, so the doctors want to get hold of a couple and basically experiment with them, to see if there’s any way to improve patient outcomes when they’re in a First World setting, rather than Third World.

I just hope all the caregivers move into a dorm together and STAY THERE instead of going home every night....
