West Africa: Ebola Outbreak - Ghana Bans West African Flights

GHANA has banned flights from other West African countries following the outbreak of Ebola virus.

The Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company, Charles Asare, said this was part of elaborate emergency measures the authorities are implementing to contain the virus.

In addition to this, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of Liberian refugees still at the Buduburam Refugee Camp.

There is an outbreak of the Ebola disease in the West African sub-region which has already claimed over 600 lives.

Affected countries include Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Ghana's Health Ministry has announced that efforts are underway to establish Ebola treatment centres across the country.

The centres are to be located in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale to cater for the southern, middle and the northern zones of Ghana.

Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, admonished Ghanaians to be patient because the government is doing its possible best to protect Ghanaians.

"It is worth bearing in mind that preparedness is not an event but a process," he said.

Even though a suspected fever case which was reported at a clinic in Ghana was negative, Ghanaians have expressed fear about the possible spread of the disease in the country due to closeness to the four countries where deaths have been recorded.

Governments in the sub-region are putting in place stringent measures to prevent the further spread of the disease.

A friend who worked for an NGO said they had a phrase: WAWA. It meant “West Africa Wins Again.” It was used to describe a variety of perfectly preventable problems.

A reasonable action.

We should do the same. If the FAA can ban flights to Israel because of one mortar round that missed the airport by 5 miles, they can certainly ban flights from a region with an outbreak of ebola.

Seems a bit late.

By the way, is there a thread on FR about preparation measures people in the US might take to shelter-in-place once this breaks out here (since we haven’t banned flights, and the southern border is a sieve).

I’m ignoring the cases being flown in with apparently adequate protective measures, but once the first uncontrolled public case is reported, the stuff you need to buy will already be gone from shelves.

No, I have not seen a thread about prepping for this. Although some suggestion is the quarantines have lasted up to 42 days. Ebola, should burn itself out. Why this one hasn’t yet is anybody’s guess.

Once an area is quarantined, nobody in/out. Also word is out that a place is being set-up in Arizona for Ebola quarantine of travelers.

But Hussein is welcoming them here, - even sending planes to pick them up.

"Ok...Ghana...has banned flights."

That means Ghana is now officially the smartest country in the world.

WAWA was used by the first Peace Corps volunteers. I first heard it in 1967.

Yup...as much as we’d like to demand we close our flights...a good questions is...why haven’t they shut it down in their own country?

The US has banned flights, too.... uh, no, gotta take that back. The US is flying ebola into the country.

Anyone else wondering if any of the passengers on Sawyer’s two flights were also on their way to the US?

Good, that’s a start. Hopefully the rest of the world will follow suit.

My granddaughter teaches 4th graders at a Christian international school in Accra, Ghana. You might take banned flights into Ghana from other West African countries, but one of the loves of my life is in the air as we speak returning for the school year.

Not Ebola specifically, but Kartographer runs the prepper ping list. Topics such as pandemics and sheltering-in-place come up often.

Unfortunately, someone with half the sense you have is not in the White House.
You hit the nail right on the head.
