Mysterious lake in Tunisian desert turns from turquoise to green sludge
The Guardian ^ | Aug 1, 2014 | Kim Willsher

The stretch of water, dubbed the Lac de Gafsa, may be the result of a rupture in the rock above the local water table.

The lake appeared in the Tunisian desert like a mirage; one minute there was nothing but scorching sand, the next a large expanse of turquoise water.

Shepherds discovered the lake, thought to be up to 18 meters deep and covering one hectare, three weeks ago. Local geologists suspect seismic activity may have ruptured the rock above the water table sending the liquid to the surface.

Water in the desert should be good news.

Most springs in the Desert Southwest and elsewhere are there due to the movement of a fault which as the article states blocks a flow of water in an aquifer and hence brings the water to the surface.

It is, however, someone or something will be blamed for the change in color, thought I would get a jump on it. LOL!

From the patterns of vegetation, it’s clear that this “lake” has been around for some time.

Originally, Dierkes Lake was not a lake at all. It was a blind canyon that housed the apple orchards of John Dierkes. When a canal irrigation system was inserted in the area the orchards began to flood. Dierkes made the best of a bad situation and started charging a fee for kids to swim in his new lake. A dock, pulley, and concession stand were built to encourage visitors. The orchard is still under the lake and often times swimmers notice small apples that float to the surface.

Kewl! IIRC, Lucas heard the name while filming episode 4, liked it, changed the spelling and put it in as the name of the desert planet. Lucas did that a lot. Like the number of the trash compactor (3263827) was actually the direct line phone number to George Lucas’ office at Twentieth Century Fox!
