Water supply to city with 400,000 residents 'poisoned' - State of emergency in Toledo, Ohio

Toxins possibly from algae on Lake Erie fouled the water supply of the Ohio city of Toledo Saturday, forcing officials to issue warnings not to drink the water and the governor to declare a state of emergency as worried residents descended on stores, quickly clearing shelves of bottled water.

The city advised about 400,000 residents in Toledo, most of its suburbs and a few areas in southeastern Michigan not to brush their teeth with or boil the water because that would only increase the toxin's concentration. Showers and baths are fine, the mayor said.

Toledo issued the warning just after midnight after tests at one treatment plant showed two sample readings for microsystin above the standard for consumption.

Gov John Kasich's emergency order will allow the state to begin bringing water into the Toledo area.

Toledo leaders were setting up water distribution centers around the city, limiting families to one case of bottled water. Some stores that were receiving new shipments of water putting limits on how much people can buy.

Mayor D Michael Collins said at a news conference that city officials hope to know later Saturday how long the warning will stay in place, and he pleaded with residents not to panic. There were no reports yet of people becoming sick from drinking the water, Collins said.

This situation could last a week....
From the press conference tonight: (Mayor says it is out of his hands - Feds are in charge - see FEMA convoy in MI vid below)

Mayor is stuttering around. The laboratory is showing consistency and lack of consistency but they will not take a risk. Want to be sure to be safe to consume.

He says, I can only tell you what I know. Information coming from Fed Gov. and EPA in terms of positive information, as in definitive information, should be available by mid afternoon Sunday.

Talked to CDC this afternoon. Now saying may not be good to shower because could cause skin problems. May want to be more leery per CDC.

Health Department Director Dr. David Grossman: The CDC now says people with sensitive skin may not want to shower, as it may cause irritation. Those with liver disease should also avoid showering or bathing in water as the water may cause some liver issues.

Regardless of a hopefully negative test result, system will have to be flushed and that will take at least 7 days....thats according to the Chief Chemist at the Toledo Water Treatment Plant in a interview last year.

Very unlikely to spread beyond the Toledo area as the lake around Toledo is in a different water basin of Lake Erie than Cleveland. It is much shallower and Toledo is in an area where the water is actually much more stagnant. Also The Cleveland Water Department has deep water intake cribs several miles out in the lake.

One of the problems that causes the blooms is the Zebra Muscles. They clean the lake making it clearer. The sunlight penetrates farther into the water promoting more algae growth.

I Agee with you.
People have been drinking this water for 150 years and as far as I know, nothing like this has happened before.
I’m not into conspiracy theories but the chaos created can be used to measure reaction to future catastrophes.
Water treatment plants should be equiped by now to deal with organic contaminates.
Someone’s poisoned the water.

This SHOULD be THE major breaking news story (do the alphabet cable networks run on intern ONLY staff on weekends?)

Could the delay be time to work out the protocols for the up coming work week? Restaurants will have to be closed; hair salons; etc. How will mds, dds, etc offices function?

Those were the 1st couple things I thought of (very quickly). A lot more work environments to be hit as well. This is a disaster...and why is the LameStreamMedia avoiding it?

I understand that Detroit, not that far away, has been trying to sell water for money.

It all depends on what you mean by "trying".....Detroit already supplies virtually all the suburbs north and south with their water needs.
