(CNN) -- After an 11-year-old girl was shot and killed by a stray bullet while sitting on a friend's bedroom floor, Chicago officials met Monday to discuss the city's recent surge in gun violence.

The girl was just one of 47 shooting victims in Chicago over the weekend, five of which were fatal, according to statistics released by the Chicago Police Department.

Reminds me of a time when I was visiting my brother in St. Louis. He had a vanity plate that read "GONTOKY". We were in the parking lot at a grocery store one afternoon and a middle-aged A.A. lady looked at his plate and said something like "you be serious?" She looked like a nice enough lady and my brother said "yes ma'am...I have a place in Kentucky where I go down to to fish". It means "Gone to Kentucky"

She broke out laughing. Me and my brother looked at each other quizzically...then she said..."Lordy, I thought it meant "(Going) to kill you".

For this year it is 228 with these five (which is below they yearly tally of last year). Last year was 440. Based on the monthly average at the end of July, 2014 will come in at 382. Augsut of last year was the highest moth at 54 so that average could go up some, but total is unlikely to hit 440.

This was a special meeting, you see. In prior meetings, the topic matter was 39 shot and 4 dead. Or, maybe it was 23 shot and 3 dead. Or it could have been 41 shot and 5 dead. These numbers are different, therefore they must be due to different causes. I’m glad local gov’t is on it and are sensitive to the nuances, because they are such effective managers of these things.

You should realize that Chicago trauma centers have had more recent experience with treating 9mm gunshot wounds than the Army and Navy medical services, combined.

If you get hit by a stray while at a convention, you couldn't pick a better place for emergency care than Stroger or Northwestern in Chicago. Hence the survival rates.

You have to wonder if the Chicago Tourist Bureau is using this fact as a selling point...
