Gene Simmons is anything but sympathetic when it comes to depression.
“Drug addicts and alcoholics are always, ‘The world is a harsh place.’ My mother was in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany,” the Kiss front man, 64, said in an interview with SongFacts.com last month. “I don’t want to hear x all about ‘the world as a harsh place.’ She gets up every day, smells the roses and loves life.”

I’m with Gene. I don’t take it literally, and I don’t even think he was really referring to those with clinical depression.. It was geared more towards the Emo-types.
In that regard, I tend to agree with him. My grandparents came from Italy and they were PROUD to learn English and become Americans. After a short while, they stopped speaking Italian, because "that was the old language. We're in America now, we are Americans, so we speak like Americans."
I think you're correct about that.
Gene Simmons is a very smart guy. And he has a powerful message regarding America, and all its opportunities and advantages. It’s something that people just might listen to.
Unfortunately, all that will be drowned out by his stupid and insensitive comments about people killing themselves.

This is out of context. He was talking about about a specific bandmate, not saying depressed people in general should kill themselves.
I was thinking he was referring to people that have the disease sometimes called “Afluenza”
One of the reasons I got out of secondary school teaching so I didn’t have to hear the children of millionaires (Literally multimillionaires as I was at an international school in Hong Kong) complain about how hard life was and how their parents just didn’t know or understand them.

He was pointing out the absurdity of someone living in a free country, with food, clothing, housing, free education and more luxuries than most third world folks could ever imagine and they whine about how hard life is.... I agree with him - shut up or do it. If they are so freaking miserable and claim they can’t do anything about it - or won’t - then why drag everyone along with them for years. It destroys families trying to deal with people who don’t want help - including drunks, drug addicts and depressives.

He’s basically saying to them to stop feeling sorry for themselves and don’t take for granted but appreciate the life you have because it can be way, way worse than what it is.
When I lived in the burbs, there was only 12 houses on our street and we all got along....Once every year one of the neighbors sent out invitations to all us gals to meet at her house for coffee and donuts and we will have a pity party...bring all your emotional crap and we will sit around, drink coffee and feel sorry for ourselves. When we are done we will all feel better and have another one next year, same time, same place. You can only pity yourself at the pity party....it was great fun...
